POSITION: Agricultural Facilities Assistant

LOCATION: Nonnewaug High School

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Agricultural Facilities Assistant supports the daily operations and seasonal maintenance of Nonnewaug High School's Ellis Clark Regional Agriscience and Technology Program facilities. This role plays a vital part in sustaining the health, safety, and functionality of educational facilities. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, dependable, and able to collaborate with students, staff, and volunteers in a dynamic agricultural education environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Facility Maintenance & Operation

  • Water and drag the equine riding arena to maintain proper footing conditions.
  • Perform routine brush hogging of livestock pastures using tractor implements.
  • Assist with routine repairs, preventative maintenance, and grounds upkeep.
  • Monitor and maintain the gasoline and oil supply used for farm equipment, landscaping tools, and agricultural mechanics classes; ensure fuel tanks are filled, two-stroke mixes are prepared as needed, and oil reserves are stocked for facility equipment.
  • Manage farm deliveries, including coordinating feed, hay, and supply drop-offs; work collaboratively with agriscience staff to determine inventory needs and communicate with vendors to schedule and receive deliveries.
  • Provide transportation for agriscience teachers using school vehicles as needed, including drop-offs and pick-ups for bus maintenance appointments or other program-related tasks that require district vehicle use.

Laboratory Facilities Support

  • Coordinate and maintain the student weekend feeding schedule in collaboration with agriscience staff.
  • Feed and monitor companion animals, livestock, and equines on weekends or during holidays when student workers are unavailable.
  • Observe animals for signs of illness or injury and report concerns promptly.
  • Clean and bed stalls, pens, or aquaculture areas to ensure safe and functional environments.

Student & Program Collaboration

  • Work closely with agriscience teachers who manage designated sections of the facilities (e.g., livestock, equine, aquaculture, greenhouse, etc.).
  • Provide guidance to student workers in proper handling and facility tasks.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs (e.g., hay bales, feed bags)

Work Schedule:

  • Flexible part-time hours averaging 25-28 hours per week, with seasonal peak workloads.
  • Must be available for weekend feedings and rotating holiday coverage.

Salary:

  • $20-$25 an hour depending on work experience and recommendations.
  • CDL candidates could earn additional driving compensation

Qualifications:

  • Experience in farm, livestock, or equine facility operations strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in operating farm machinery, including tractors, brush hogs, and utility vehicles.
  • Applicants must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred but not required.
