Job Summary

The Adventure Programs Student Assistant will help run the indoor climbing wall in the Wellness Recreation Center. Staff will get "on the job" training on how to belay, inspect equipment, how to set up the ropes, how to manage the wall etc. Students will also be able to assist with outdoor trips and workshops (if proper prior training requirements have been met).

Staff will also need a First Aid/CPR certification, the certification will be offered after the initial hire date.

Responsibilities

Equipment Setup, Inspection, and Breakdown (20%)

• Inspect, inventory, and document climbing wall equipment before and after each shift.
• Set up and dismantle climbing wall ropes, harnesses, and related equipment in accordance with safety procedures.
• Maintain accurate equipment usage and inspection records.

Participant Engagement and Climbing Wall Operations (60%)

• Welcome and assist participants at the climbing wall, including check-in and program orientation.
• Fit participants with appropriate climbing equipment, including harnesses and climbing shoes.
• Provide participant support through spotting and belaying, following established safety standards.
• Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages participation.
• Assist with promotional efforts, including social media content and outreach initiatives.
• Support the development and delivery of instructional, educational, and special-event programming at the climbing wall.

Outdoor Trips and Workshop Support (10%)

• Assist with outdoor recreation trips, workshops, and special programs based on qualifications, training, and departmental needs.
• Provide logistical and operational support for Adventure Program activities as assigned.

Other (10%)

• Perform other duties and assist with special projects as assigned.

Current enrollment at GCSU (6 or more credit hours).

Ability to work a flexible schedule around class commitments.

Preferred Experience

Preferred belaying experience with the B.U.S method, but not required.

Proposed Salary

The proposed salary is $10/hour.

ABILITIES

Must be able to tie knots and stand/belay for periods of time

SKILLS

Need to be able to follow instructions on how to set up the climbing wall, and all other skills covered in the trainings
