    About Beacon Kalamazoo

    Beacon Kalamazoo provides 24/7 emergency care and a Level II Trauma Center. We deliver care for serious life-threatening injuries/illnesses, and your everyday health needs, including labor and delivery. We offer specialty care for heart/vascular disease, lung and sleep disorders, mental health conditions, and women's health. We offer a wide range of outpatient services, including diagnostic imaging, lab tests, respiratory therapy, and rehabilitation therapy services.

    Job Responsibilities

    Plans, develops, implements and evaluates the orientation and continuing education programs by:

    • Selecting, training, assigning work, evaluating and, if necessary, recommending the discipline and discharge of subordinate staff to supervisor/manager/director.
    • Participating in developing short and long-term goals and objectives for assigned areas.
    • Developing, recommending, implementing, updating and supporting departmental and hospital wide policies and procedures designed to meet identified goals and objectives.
    • Responsible for educating or developing BKH associates for other areas and providers on any changes or updates within Clinical Nutrition as directed by department leader.
    • Preforming all responsible job requirements for the clinical nutrition department
    • Creating, monitoring and evaluating the outcomes of established training and educational programs; also making changes, when necessary, in collaboration with the supervisor/manager/director and educational services, as needed.
    • Being a educational resource for accreditation readiness (i.e. TJC, CMS, ISDH) and ensuring all department personnel are survey ready.
    • Responsible for clinical onboarding, training, mentoring, and on-going development of clinical nutrition associates
    • Responsible for onboarding all dietetic interns, creating training materials, and ensure they are meeting all required competencies.
    • Serving as the main educational resource as requested by managers and associates; in-person and on-call
    • Provides Medical Nutritional Therapy (MNT), using assessment, goal/intervention setting, planning, implementation, and evaluation by participating in inpatient and outpatient dietitian coverage, including holidays, weekends, and call, as directed by the department leader.
    • Ensures all dietitians are practicing to full extent of their licenses/registration and adhering to the CDR/AND standards.

    Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

    • Preparing and/or directing the preparation of required records, reports and research studies of the various educational activities.
    • Participating on appropriate inter- and intra-departmental meetings and committees.
    • Developing and monitoring the educational standards.
    • Obtaining/or maintaining advanced certifications (i.e. CNSC, CDCES, AP-RD, etc.)
    • Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as directed by department leader.

    Organizational Responsibilities:

    • Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

    • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.

    • Attends and participates in interdisciplinary BKH and Beacon committees or meetings as required by department leader.

    • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.

    • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.

    • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.

    • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.

    • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.

    • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.

    • Complies with established organization and department policies.

    • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

    Required Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in Dietetics/Nutrition required.
    • Registration with CDR (Commission on Dietetic Registration) required.
    • Membership with the AND (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) required.
    • Licensed Dietitian in the state of Michigan required (when available).
    • CPR Certification required.
    • Minimum two to three years of clinical experience, which may include instruction, program development, and ICU experience is preferred.
    • Advanced Certification within 1-2 years of obtaining position required.
    • Master's degree required/preferred and is required for all new dietitians per CDR/AND as of 2024. (Any new dietitian with a completed bachelors degree after 2024 must have a masters prior to sitting for their boards.)

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Requires an in-depth knowledge of adult education philosophies and trends, programs, techniques, tools and equipment, as well as policies, procedures and processes, and standards of practice in Medical Nutritional Therapy.
    • Demonstrates well-developed leadership skills necessary to plan, develop, direct and evaluate the activities of assigned clinical nutrition associates.
    • Demonstrates high level of analytical skills necessary to develop and maintain a complex educational system, prepare reports and studies, analyze training needs, design training programs, etc.
    • Demonstrates high level of interpersonal skills necessary to establish and maintain effective work relationships and the ability, in a wide variety of situations (negotiating, persuading, counseling, etc.), to conduct effective training programs, including solid public speaking and presentation skills.
    • Demonstrates well-developed communication skills, both written and verbal, including solid public speaking and presentation skills.
    • Master's Degree related to dietetics field required and/or Advanced Certification (i.e. CDCES, CNSC, CSO, RD-AP, CCTD, CSP, CSR, CEDRD, IBCLC, CSOWM, and CSSD) preferred.
    • Credentialed for order writing privileges preferred.
    • Works with staff, patients, physicians and others; also has frequent changes in job demands.
    • Traveling between facilities: MHSB, EGH, TRH, BKH, BAH, BDH, and CHB, as needed
    • May be exposed to possible biohazards.
