Japanese Instructor Position (Adult Language Classes)

The Japanese American Service Committee (JASC) is seeking experienced Japanese language instructors for its Adult Japanese Language Program for the 2026–2027 academic year and beyond.

JASC offers Japanese language classes for adult learners at multiple proficiency levels. We are currently seeking instructors for the following courses:

  • Beginners I

  • Beginners II

  • Intermediate

  • Advanced

We are seeking instructors who can teach in person at JASC and/or online. Preference will be given to instructors who are available to commit to the full academic year and provide consistency for students as they progress through the program.

JASC's Adult Japanese Language Program is designed to help students build practical language skills and confidence while developing a deeper understanding of Japanese language and culture. Courses follow established textbooks and curriculum guidelines, but instructors are encouraged to bring their own teaching styles and develop activities that support student engagement, growth, and retention.

Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare and teach engaging Japanese language classes for adult learners.

  • Develop lessons aligned with the designated textbook and course curriculum, including Genki I, Genki II, or other materials appropriate to the course level.

  • Create and implement supplemental activities and materials that support conversation, listening, reading, writing, grammar, and overall language development.

  • Customize lessons and teaching approaches to meet student needs while maintaining alignment with course learning goals.

  • Foster an engaging and supportive classroom environment that encourages student participation, confidence, growth, and continued enrollment.

  • Monitor student progress and communicate with JASC staff regarding student needs, attendance, and other program-related matters.

  • Participate in instructor meetings and collaborate with JASC staff and fellow instructors to support curriculum continuity and student progression.

  • Communicate with students and JASC staff regarding reasonable class-related questions and concerns.

Class Format & Schedule

  • Schedule: Classes meet once per week in eight-week sessions.

  • Class Length: 90 minutes per class.

  • Academic Year: The program consists of four eight-week sessions, totaling 32 weeks of instruction.

  • Class Size:

    • Beginners I & II: Approximately 15–20 students

    • Intermediate: Maximum of 15 students

    • Advanced: Maximum of 15 students

  • Location: In-person classes are held at JASC, located at 5700 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago. Online classes are conducted virtually through Zoom or Google Meets.

  • Employment Period: September 2026–September 2027.

  • Commitment: Preference will be given to instructors who can commit to teaching a full 32-week curriculum across all four sessions.

Applicants are welcome to indicate which course level(s) and format(s) they are interested in teaching.

  • Strong English communication skills.

  • Approximately 1–3 years of Japanese language teaching experience is preferred.

  • Ability to effectively explain Japanese language concepts to adult learners at varying levels of proficiency.

  • Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to independently prepare engaging lessons while working within an established curriculum.

  • Comfort using digital communication and teaching platforms for online instruction.

Japanese language teaching certification or relevant educational credentials are strongly preferred but not required.

Curriculum & Teaching Materials

JASC will provide instructors with the designated textbook for their assigned course. Instructors are responsible for developing or obtaining additional materials needed to support their lessons and teaching activities.

While courses follow an established curriculum and textbook, instructors are encouraged to bring their own teaching style, activities, and supplemental materials to the classroom. We value instructors who can balance curriculum goals with creative and engaging approaches that promote student growth and long-term retention.
