Job Requirements

Position Summary

To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by assisting pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Pharmacy technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist

Primary Accountabilities

  • Fills physician orders or stock requisitions accurately.
  • Preparation of intravenous admixtures (including but not limited to, chemotherapy and biologics) using aseptic technique and safe handling for hazardous drugs.
  • Replenishes medications accurately.
  • Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.
  • Attends pharmacy staff meetings and reads pertinent email communication.
  • Participates in orientation, education, and training programs. Reviews literature and other materials as assigned.
  • Completes all competence/skills assessment requirements.
  • Maintains patient and department/hospital confidentiality.
  • Maintain Technician Registration.
  • Generates reports as required.
  • Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files documentation in appropriate locations.
  • Collects data, conducts quality monitors, and completes documentation as assigned.
  • Maintain Controlled Substance logs
  • Label all medications in accordance with departmental policies and federal/local standards.
  • Maintain and replenish emergency medication boxes.
  • Answers the telephone, identifying self and department. Directs calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Answers requests at the window.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
  • Demonstrates good oral and written communication
  • Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well organized. Keeps pharmacy equipment clean.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Maintains patient and Department/Hospital confidentiality
  • Works closely with team members to reschedule patients due to unobtainable authorizations and appointments that are out of sequence with treatment plan.
  • Queuing of patient for appointments based on treatment plan and ordering of medications
  • Use of EMR to verify treatment plan
  • Maintains cost effective drug inventory
  • Provides monthly inventory reports to reflect cost changes to inventory
  • Weekly inventory of medication cabinets
  • Maintains IV mixing equipment including but not limited to mixing hoods, ante room and other areas involved in pharmacy.
  • Maintain sample logs and medications.
  • Ability to work independently.

  • Attention to accuracy, organized, good communications skills (orally and in writing), ability to handle and work well under stress.

  • Ability to evaluate medical literature.

Work Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: High school diploma or GED
  • Licensure: Current State of Florida Pharmacy Technician registration or current State of Florida Pharmacy Intern registration required.
  • Certification: National pharmacy technician certification by the PTCB preferred
  • Work Experience: IV admixture experience required
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Computer skills to support distribution systems required
  • At least 5 years of technician experience
  • Availability to work Monday through Friday.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers. Good hand and wrist dexterity to enable typing and/or computer work for 8-10 hours/day.
  • Able to verbalize, read and follow instructions as written or placed in EMR.
  • Ability to work in noisy distracting atmosphere, to handle frequent interruptions, to adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
  • Handle large volumes of work for long periods of time.
  • Walk, bend, stoop, twist, sit, stand for long periods of time, 8-10 hours a day.
  • May require lifting and carrying light loads (Up to 40 lbs.)
