Title: Adjunct Instructor - Sound Design
Department: Humanities & Social Sciences Reports To: Director of Theatre Position Type: Faculty
Position Summary: The Theatre Arts & Technology program seeks an adjunct instructor to teach Sound Design for the Theatre, a course centered on storytelling through sound. This class introduces students to the artistic, conceptual and collaborative processes that shape the sonic world of a theatrical production. Students explore how sound influences emotional landscape, rhythm, space and audience perception, while developing the technical skills necessary to realize their artistic vision.
The course moves fluidly between analysis and creation - beginning with script interpretation and conceptual development, and progressing into research, recording, editing, composition, system implementation and live performance integration. Emphasis is placed on collaboration with directors, designers, and performers, reflecting the inherently interdisciplinary nature of theatrical production.
The program values practitioners who approach sound not merely as reinforcement but as narrative architecture - an expressive design element equal to lighting, scenery and performance. The ideal candidate is an active professional sound designer who brings current industry practice, creative curiosity and a commitment to mentorship into the classroom.
The course will be developed and taught by the instructor in consultation with the Director of the Theatre Arts & Technology program. This position is on campus and delivered face-to-face.
