The Adjunct Instructor of English is responsible for providing engaging, student-centered instruction for two sections of English during the Fall semester at Interlochen Arts Academy. The instructor will support students in developing their skills in reading, writing, analysis, critical thinking, and communication through classroom instruction, discussion, written assignments, and individual feedback. The instructor will foster an inclusive and intellectually engaging classroom environment while supporting the artistic and academic mission of Interlochen Arts Academy.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plans and delivers engaging instruction for two sections of English appropriate for high school students in a rigorous, arts-focused academic environment
- Develops and maintains course materials, assignments, and learning activities aligned with established course objectives and curriculum
- Guides students in the close reading, analysis, and discussion of literary and other texts
- Provides instruction in writing, including organization, argument, evidence, revision, grammar, and style
- Encourages critical thinking, thoughtful discussion, and the development of students' individual voices as readers and writers
- Provides timely, constructive feedback on student work and evaluates student progress throughout the semester
- Maintains accurate attendance, grades, and other required academic records
- Communicates effectively with students and appropriate Academy personnel regarding student progress and classroom needs
- Creates an inclusive, respectful, and engaging classroom environment that encourages discussion, curiosity, collaboration, and differing perspectives
- Supports the educational philosophy, community standards, and mission of Interlochen Center for the Arts
- Participates in required faculty meetings, training, or other academic responsibilities appropriate to the adjunct appointment
- Performs other duties related to the courses as assigned
- Bachelor's degree in English, literature, writing, education, or a related field required; master's degree preferred
- Previous teaching experience at the high school or college level preferred
- Strong knowledge of English composition, literature, and literary analysis
- Strong writing, editing, communication, and critical-thinking skills
- Ability to develop engaging and accessible instruction for students with varying academic and artistic backgrounds
- Ability to provide thoughtful and constructive feedback on student writing
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills
- Ability to meet academic deadlines and maintain accurate student records
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and artistic disciplines

- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and academic leadership
- Proficiency with Google Workspace and experience using Learning Management Systems (LMS) to manage course materials, assignments, grading, and student communication
