Position Overview
Shorter University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Communication Studies invites applications for qualified adjunct/part-time instructors to teach undergraduate Communication Studies courses. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong disciplinary expertise, effective teaching ability, and a commitment to student learning aligned with the institution's mission.
Primary Teaching Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate communication courses such as COM 1010 (Introduction to Communication)
- Deliver instruction consistent with approved course outcomes and departmental expectations
- Use student-centered, evidence-based instructional strategies.
- Assess student learning and provide timely, constructive feedback.
- Maintain regular communication with students (including timely response to inquiries)
- Submit grades, attendance, and required assessment documentation by institutional deadlines.
Institutional & Professional Responsibilities
- Support learning outcomes assessment and accreditation processes as requested.
- Adhere to institutional policies (e.g., FERPA) and academic integrity standards.
- Contribute to a positive learning environment that supports student success and retention.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Doctoral degree in Communication or related field, or
- Master's degree in communication, or
- Master's degree in a related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Communication.
Additional requirements:
- Agreement with Shorter University's Mission, Lifestyle Statement, and Statement of Faith.
- Graduate transcripts documenting relevant coursework (official transcripts required upon hire).
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated content expertise appropriate for undergraduate instruction.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience teaching undergraduate courses (face-to-face and/or online)
- Experience with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas)
- Commitment to engaging, and ethical teaching practices
Work Environment
- Courses may be delivered face-to-face or online formats.
- Teaching assignments are based on departmental needs and enrollment.
- Adjunct faculty play a key role in supporting student achievement and academic quality.
