Position Description

The Medical Humanities program at the College of Charleston invites applications for an Adjunct Instructor for Spring 2027, with the possibility of renewal.

Position Description

The successful candidate will teach 1 to 2 in-person sections of Intro to Medical Humanities (MEDH 200). This class provides students with a generalized background in the interdisciplinary field of Medical Humanities. Through lectures, readings, films, projects, and class discussions students will develop an understanding of and respect for the various ways scholars study and conceptualize human health and health experiences throughout time and space. As Medical Humanities draws from many fields, the course will explore a variety of scholarly perspectives, including history, philosophy, literary analysis, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and artistic presentation. Additionally, this course will endeavor to encourage and strengthen critical thinking and analytical skills in relation to, and across, these topics so that students are able to make meaningful interdisciplinary connections within both academic and non-academic settings.

Minimum Qualifications

• An M.A. in a relevant field
• Teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Real-world experience in health settings that informs pedagogy

About the Program

The College of Charleston's minor in Medical Humanities draws from a variety of departments, including history, English, anthropology, sociology, psychology, Latin-American studies, philosophy, women's and gender studies, education, and public health. The minor approaches health, disease and medical care as culturally embedded human experiences that vary across time and place.
