Adjunct Faculty - Physics (Adjunct Lecturer/Instructor)

Department: Science

Reports to: Dr. Paula Williams, Vice President forAcademic Affairs

Employment Type: Adjunct

Location: On Campus

Schedule: Fall 26 semester: Physics lecture runs M/W 1:00-2:15 and lab is M 2:30-4:15 and W 2:30-4:15.

Compensation is based on a per course credits value and course level according to the Rivier University Adjunct Course pay scale.

The Adjunct Faculty member will teach assigned undergraduate and/or graduate physics courses in alignment with the University's academic standards, departmental learning outcomes, and course syllabi. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality instruction, foster an inclusive learning environment, and support student success through effective teaching and timely assessment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned physics courses Physics I in fall 26 and Physics II in spring 27.
  • Prepare and deliver course instruction including lectures, problem-solving sessions, laboratory instruction and/or review sessions.
  • Refine course materials, Canvas shell and syllabus are and will require updating for semester.
  • Support learning outcomes by ensuring instruction and assessments align with departmental and university curriculum requirements.
  • Grade student work (assignments, exams, labs, projects) and provide timely and constructive feedback.
  • Maintain accurate course records in the learning management system (LMS) and gradebook, according to university policy and deadlines.
  • Provide academic help and respond to student inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Support academic integrity by following university policies for exam administration, plagiarism prevention, and acceptable academic conduct.
  • Coordinate with departmental staff/lab managers to ensure labs, equipment, safety procedures, and materials are prepared (if teaching labs).
  • Ensure compliance with accessibility and inclusion requirements, including reasonable accommodations as applicable.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Physics or a closely related field (required). Ph.D. preferred, or equivalent professional teaching/research experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in physics appropriate to the course(s) assigned.
  • Experience teaching introductory physics, physics,
  • Prior experience teaching physics laboratories and/or using lab equipment safety is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)
  • Ability to create a supportive, inclusive classroom environment
  • Solid understanding of physics concepts and pedagogical approaches for physics education
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Commitment to student learning and academic standards

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

  • Teaching activities require working in classrooms and/or laboratory settings.
