The Department of Clinical Sciences in the newly established Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine invites applications for a Adjunct Faculty position in the field of a primary care discipline. We are recruiting new faculty who have achieved excellence in education, teaching, and research and are prepared to contribute to our bold vision (http://www.uh.edu/medicine/).

The Director of the Electives will provide oversight of the electives of the College of Medicine, ensuring the breadth and quality commensurate with the robust student experiences students need for clinical skill development and career exploration. The job reports to the Associate Dean for Medical Education and is responsible for development of the electives catalog, student assessment and support, and alignment of clinical skills with the college of medicine medical education program objectives, competency-based frameworks, and LCME accreditation standards.

This position will be part-time at 0.4 FTE.

Responsibilities

Elective Program Oversight and Development

• Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing management of elective experiences across the curriculum.
• Ensure a sufficient number and breadth of electives spanning medical specialties to meet student learning needs and career goals.
• Regularly assess gaps and emerging needs and oversee the development of new elective offerings.

Faculty Recruitment and Engagement

• Oversee the recruitment, onboarding, development, and retention of faculty participating in elective experiences.
• Provide guidance, feedback, and support to faculty to ensure effective teaching and alignment with program goals.

Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement

• Partner with the Office of Assessment and Quality Improvement to evaluate elective effectiveness and lead continuous quality improvement efforts.
• Use student outcomes, evaluations, and performance data to inform program enhancements and ensure alignment with educational objectives.
• Support the development and implementation of competency-based assessment strategies for student learning.

Program Maintenance and Operations

• Oversee the maintenance and accuracy of the elective catalog, including integration of student evaluation data.
• Ensure consistency, organization, and transparency of elective offerings and requirements.

Learning Environment, Student Experience, and Remediation

• Promote a positive, inclusive learning environment across all elective experiences.
• Address concerns and provide timely feedback to faculty, staff, and students to support high-quality experiences.
• Provide student academic support and remediation as needed to ensure achievement of elective course requirements and relevant competencies.

Curriculum Integration and Collaboration

• Collaborate with curriculum leadership to ensure vertical and horizontal integration of electives within the MD program.
• Participate in and lead meetings related to elective planning and curricular development.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Medical degree from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic college of medicine
• Board certification or board eligibility in the applicant's designated specialty
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Knowledge of best practices in teaching and learning, including active and applied learning modalities.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to use data to inform decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications

• Track record of scholarly contributions to the field of medical education
• Familiarity with accreditation standards for medical education (e.g., LCME, ACGME).
• Experience in mentoring and supporting faculty members in their professional development.

Applicants must have a PhD, MD or DO, dependent on the position, from an accredited institution. Official transcripts are required for faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidate(s). Physician applicants must possess an unrestricted Texas Medical License and board certification in their specialty. While exceptions may be considered, approval must be obtained from the Vice Dean of Education and/or the Dean of the College of Medicine and the Office of the Provost. All positions within the University of Houston System are security sensitive and will require a criminal history check. Physician applicants are required to provide documentation of current licensure and board certification as part of their application materials.

Employees are expected to have a home address in the state of Texas for the duration of their appointments.
