Position OverviewWe are seeking an experienced
Accounts Payable Director to lead a large-scale accounts payable and corporate travel and expense operation. This is a highly visible leadership role focused on building a strong team, improving processes, strengthening controls, and driving greater efficiency through technology and automation.
Rather than managing day-to-day transaction processing, this individual will provide strategic and operational oversight of the AP function, establish performance expectations and KPIs, and address significant issues and risks. The Director will partner closely with Accounting, Treasury, Tax, Purchasing, Technology, and Operations to ensure accurate payments, effective controls, and reliable financial reporting.This is an excellent opportunity for an AP leader who enjoys developing teams, improving how work gets done, and using technology and data to modernize a high-volume finance operation.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the overall accounts payable operation, including invoice processing, approvals, exceptions, vendor support, and payment execution.
- Establish AP policies, procedures, service standards, and performance expectations.
- Lead, develop, and mentor the AP team while building accountability, cross-training, and succession planning.
- Maintain strong controls around vendor setup, invoice approvals, payment authorization, duplicate payments, segregation of duties, and system access.
- Partner with Accounting and Treasury on payment schedules, cash requirements, banking activity, vendor terms, and working capital opportunities.
- Oversee AP-related close activities, reconciliations, accruals, aging, account analysis, and audit support.
- Support 1099 reporting and applicable sales and use tax requirements.
- Provide leadership for corporate travel, employee expense reimbursement, and corporate card programs.
- Develop and monitor KPIs covering productivity, service levels, processing accuracy, controls, and expense activity.
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve workflows, expand automation, and better leverage AP and expense-management technology.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or a combination of education and directly relevant experience.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in accounts payable, travel and expense, or related finance operations.
- 5+ years of leadership experience.
- Experience managing high-volume AP operations within a large or complex organization.
- Strong understanding of accounts payable processes, internal controls, financial close requirements, expense management, 1099 reporting, and applicable tax considerations.
- Experience developing KPIs and managing operational performance at a leadership level.
- Demonstrated success improving processes and implementing or enhancing AP, workflow, expense-management, or automation technologies.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively across departments and with senior leadership.
- High level of integrity, judgment, discretion, and accountability.
- Preferred: Experience with large or multi-entity organizations, ERP platforms, invoice workflow systems, expense-management technology, corporate card programs, electronic payments, automation, and data analytics.
- Ability to work a hybrid schedule with regular onsite presence.
