Position Overview:

Oversees and supports the team responsible for the accounting, analysis, and reporting of transactions related to the general ledger, cash management, cost accounting, and accounts receivable for self-insured benefit plans, retirement plans, and the captive insurance company. This position is responsible for ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements, account reconciliations, and monthly financial analyses for management review. Responsibilities may also include oversight of Form 5500 filings and the review of estimated quarterly tax payments. The role oversees intercompany transactions between Sutter Health and its affiliated entities to ensure accurate consolidated financial reporting. In addition, this position provides oversight of complex and high-risk accounting areas within the self-insured plans, including stop-loss insurance, subrogation recoveries, and actuarial-related analyses. This includes developing an understanding of actuarial studies used in premium funding methodologies and evaluating the adequacy of reserves. The position supports the annual budgeting and forecasting processes, establishes departmental priorities, drives process improvements, and provides leadership and guidance to staff in resolving operational and accounting issues while maintaining compliance with applicable accounting standards and organizational policies.

Job Description:

  • Please Note: While this position is listed as hybrid, regular in-office attendance is required. Candidates should be prepared to commute to the Sacramento office on a consistent basis to support team collaboration and business needs.

EDUCATION:

Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.

  • Bachelor's: in Accounting, Finance or Business administration, or related field

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 years of recent relevant experience.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in producing monthly financial statements and month-end close

  • Experience in captive insurance, retirement/benefit plans, and/or healthcare industry, including self-insurance accounting issues and requirements and their impact on not-for-profit entities.

  • Demonstrated experience in continuous quality improvement initiatives, with the ability to effectively prioritize workload and manage resources to meet established deadlines.

  • Experience preparing Board or Committee agenda packages, reports, and presentation materials preferred.

  • Experience reviewing, interpreting, and applying actuarial estimates to support the accurate recording and management of insurance reserves.

  • Proven experience handling highly confidential and sensitive information, including knowledge of HIPAA requirements and adherence to organizational privacy and security policies.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with a track record of maintaining high-quality work standards in complex administrative, financial, or healthcare-related environments.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Working knowledge of accounting and/or finance operations for a particular function, line of business or program.

  • Working knowledge of basic principles and methods of accounting, auditing and financial reporting, including GAAP.

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS).

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to mentor, motivate and engage team.

  • Ability to bring individuals together to resolve differences/issues or to achieve a common understanding or acceptance of a solution.

  • Critical thinking and analytical skills with the ability to identify and analyze trends/issues and to implement solid solutions.

  • Ability to manage projects, develop plan to accomplish objectives, identify obstacles and resolve operational issues.

  • Organization and planning skills to effectively delegate, manage and/or re-prioritize activities and projects to meet deadlines while delivery quality service and maintaining a high degree of responsiveness.

  • Displays a customer service focus in all decisions and actions.

  • Demonstrates a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues to manage/minimize risks.

  • Ability to establish trust and credibility, and to interact and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of role's duties while respecting cultural and linguistic differences and fostering an inclusive work environment.

Pay Range is $117,436.80 to $176,155.20 / annual salary

The compensation range may vary based on the geographic location where the position is filled. Total compensation considers multiple factors, including, but not limited to a candidate's experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, departmental equity, training, and organizational needs. Base pay is only one component of Sutter Health's comprehensive total rewards program. Eligible positions also include a comprehensive benefits package.
