Overview

The Accounting Manager is responsible for supporting the day-to-day accounting operations while ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the company's financial records and reporting. This role plays a key part in the monthly close process, maintaining general ledger accuracy, preparing financial reports, supporting audits, and ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP and company accounting policies. The Accounting Manager partners with departments across the organization to provide financial support, improve processes, and contribute to informed business decisions. The ideal candidate has strong technical accounting knowledge, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced retail environment.

Duties and Responsibilities      

  • Support the “Cavender’s Culture” and drive our Mission, Vision, and Values
  • Support daily accounting operations and serve as a trusted resource for the Finance team.
  • Perform and support the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger by preparing and reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, company accounting policies, and applicable financial reporting requirements.
  • Assist with the preparation of internal and external financial reports, reconciliations, and variance analyses.
  • Support annual financial audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and responding to auditor requests.
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and improving accounting procedures and internal controls.
  • Partner with departments such as Construction, Maintenance, IT, Merchandising, and Operations to ensure accurate financial reporting and proper accounting treatment.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, increase efficiency, and strengthen financial controls.
  • Support special projects, financial analysis, and ad hoc reporting requests as assigned.
  • Stay current on accounting standards and industry best practices to support ongoing compliance and process improvements.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • 3–5 years of progressive accounting or general ledger experience.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and general accounting principles.
  • Experience preparing account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reports.
  • Experience supporting internal or external audits.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with accounting software or ERP systems (SAP preferred).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple departments.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Skills

  • CPA preferred but not required.
  • Retail or consumer goods industry experience.
  • Public accounting or audit experience preferred.
  • Experience with SAP or other ERP systems.
  • Experience with financial reporting and analytics tools such as Avalara, Alteryx, Tableau, Essbase, or similar applications.
  • Experience improving accounting processes and internal controls.
  • Positive attitude, adaptability, and a willingness to learn and take on new responsibilities.
