Description

Position Summary
The Accounting Manager plays a critical role in advancing the organization’s mission by ensuring strong financial stewardship, compliance, and transparency. This position oversees day-to-day accounting operations with a particular focus on federal grant management, fund accounting, and regulatory compliance.

Serving as a collaborative partner to program, grants, and leadership teams, the Accounting Manager approaches financial management in a way that is community-centered, supportive, and grounded in integrity. The role balances technical accounting expertise with compassion, partnership, and a commitment to exceptional quality in service of the people and communities we serve.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Accounting Operations & Financial Stewardship:
    • Manage daily accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and month-end close.
    • Ensure financial records reflect integrity, accountability, and transparency.
    • Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
    • Review journal entries and reconciliations with a focus on exceptional quality.
  • Federal Grants & Compliance:
    • Oversee federal and pass-through grant accounting in compliance with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200).
    • Monitor budgets, allowable costs, and cost allocations.
    • Prepare and review grant financial reports and drawdowns.
    • Collaborate as a trusted partner with Program and Grants teams.
  • Financial Reporting & Audits:
    • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Lead preparation for the annual audit, Single Audit, and financial monitoring reviews from funding sources.
    • Serve as primary contact with auditors.
    • Assist with Form 990 preparation. Ad hoc reports as requested.
  • Supervision & Collaboration:
    • Supervise and mentor accounting staff.
    • Develop goals, and ongoing training for accounting staff.
    • Foster a supportive, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.
    • Promote teamwork across departments.
  • Systems & Continuous Improvement:
    • Ensure effective use of financial systems.
    • Identify process improvements and innovate with purpose.
    • Assist with implementation of new standards or systems.

Working Conditions
  • Conduct work in a moderate-paced office environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Possess strength and stamina to be able to remain in a seated position for up to 90 minutes at a time throughout the workday with a minimum of fatigue and discomfort.
  • Possess visual acuity and stamina to work at a computer for at least part of each day with a minimum of fatigue and discomfort.
  • Digital finger strength to handle moderate to heavy typing.
  • Upper body strength to lift and carry file boxes weighing 30 pounds for a distance of 30 feet.
  • Lower body strength to stand and walk throughout the workday.
  • Environmental demands include an air-conditioned building with fluorescent lighting and exposure to computer monitors.
  • Must be able to travel, if necessary, to Head Start centers and/or trainings as required.

Qualifications Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • 5–7 years of nonprofit accounting experience.
  • Federal grant compliance experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Advanced Excel skills.

Qualifications Preferred:
  • CPA or CPA-eligible.
  • Single Audit experience.
  • Sage Intacct experience.
