Accountant - Real Estate / Property Management / Mortgage

Position Title: Accountant

Location: Richmond, VA

Employment Type: Full-Time/Direct Hire

Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented Accountant with experience supporting the real estate, property management, or mortgage industry. The Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, reconciling accounts, and assisting with month-end and year-end close processes. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, excellent attention to detail, and a solid understanding of accounting principles within a real estate-related environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required

  • 2+ years of accounting experience in real estate, property management, mortgage lending, or a related industry

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting best practices

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain accurate financial records and general ledger accounts

  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations and account reconciliations

  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes

  • Prepare financial statements, reports, and supporting schedules

  • Analyze financial data and identify discrepancies or trends

  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements

  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis

  • Support internal and external audit requests

  • Maintain accurate records related to properties, loans, escrow accounts, tenant activity, or mortgage transactions as applicable

  • Collaborate with management and operational teams to support business objectives

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Yardi, MRI, AppFolio, QuickBooks, Sage, or other property management/accounting systems

  • Experience handling multiple entities, properties, or loan portfolios

  • CPA designation or progress toward CPA certification is a plus

  • Advanced Excel skills including Pivot Tables and VLOOKUPs
