The Accessible Technology Support Specialist coordinates on the delivery of technology-enabled accessibility services to ensure Montana State University meets ADA Title II requirements and provides effective communication classroom supports. This role advances equitable access to academic and public programming by overseeing effective communication access needs and accommodations, supporting digital content accessibility in learning environments, and managing assistive technology systems across campus. Through cross-campus collaboration and proactive outreach, the position strengthens institutional capacity for inclusive design and sustained compliance.

Position Details

General Statement

This position provides specialized expertise in assistive technology, digital accessibility, and effective communication access to ensure students, employees, and visitors can fully participate in university programs, services, and activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assess and determine the assistive technology needs of students with sensory and mobility related disabilities; recommend, implement, and support appropriate tools to enhance access, retention, and academic success, including maintaining case documentation to evaluate effectiveness and outcomes.
• Collaborate with faculty and other departments on the coordination, delivery, and quality of effective communication accommodations, including CART, American Sign Language interpreters, captioning, assistive listening systems, audio description and related services for courses, events, and public meetings, ensuring integration with campus audiovisual systems.
• Manage the full lifecycle of accessibility technology and equipment in collaboration with campus technology partners, including but not limited to assistive listening systems, signage inventory, maintenance, distribution, upgrades, and troubleshooting.
• Support and advance institutional compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA and related accessibility standards by addressing barriers in digital content, public spaces, and university systems while staying current on regulatory requirements and emerging best practices.
• Provide training and consultation for students, faculty, and staff on assistive technologies, software tools and accessible practices; build strong partnerships and deliver coordinated outreach to promote a proactive, campuswide approach to digital accessibility.
• Integrate and meet regularly with campus partners including University Information Technology, Academic Technology, Auxiliary Services, Center for Faculty Excellence, Library Staff and faculty support units to advance digital accessibility and streamline service delivery.
• Use data and analytics to assess, audit, and improve the effectiveness of accessibility services, training, and outreach efforts.
• Partner with procurement and vendors to incorporate accessibility requirements into contracts, manage vendor relationships, and increase utilization and delivery of accessible technology related services and tools.

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in instructional technology, information systems, accessibility, or related field
• Experience supporting individuals with disabilities and learning differences or a strong demonstrated commitment to accessibility and inclusion
• Working knowledge of captioning workflows, learning management systems such as Canvas, and video platforms such as Panopto, including coordination with external vendors
• Foundational understanding of ADA Title II, effective communication requirements, and accessibility evaluation methods
• Strong communication skills with the ability to build rapport and provide training and consultation to varying audiences
• Proven organizational and project coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

• Demonstrated experience remediating digital documents and content, including Word, PowerPoint, PDFs, and web materials, to WCAG 2.1 AA standards
• Professional certification in accessibility, such as IAAP CPACC/WAS, or equivalent applied experience
• Experience with LMS accessibility tools such as YuJa, Panorama or other similar platforms
• Knowledge of assistive technologies, screen readers, magnification tools, sensory supportive technologies, as well as assistive listening systems
• Experience using data informed decision making, including basic reporting and dashboard development
