The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), Texas A&M University invites applications for full-time, 11-month/year, clinical non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor in Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery with an anticipated start date in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027.

Clinical duties and the responsibility for continued development of the orthopedic service will be shared with 4 other orthopedic surgeons. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with over 60 faculty members in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences and an active group of house officers that includes more than 50 rotating interns and residents in the other medical and surgical disciplines.

The successful candidate will devote approximately 65-75% time to clinical instruction and patient care in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) on the Small Animal Orthopedic service. The remaining time will be devoted to classroom / laboratory teaching (10-15%), scholarship (5-10%), and service (10%). Clinical responsibilities will include primary management of orthopedic surgical cases, instruction of veterinary students, mentorship of interns and surgical residents, and participation in after-hours surgical emergency coverage, which may include soft tissue surgery coverage or neurosurgical coverage, depending on the candidate and needs of the service. The ideal applicant will possess basic proficiency in stifle, elbow, and shoulder arthroscopy, minimally invasive fracture repair, treatment of complex angular limb deformities, and exposure to current total joint replacement techniques.

Applicants must be committed to a team-centered atmosphere and possess excellent communication skills with animal caregivers, faculty colleagues, veterinary students, house officers, graduate students, technicians, and staff. In addition, faculty members are expected to commit to holding themselves and colleagues accountable to the VMBS code of professional conduct.

The VMTH includes sophisticated diagnostic and patient care equipment, including two modern digital radiography suites, complete arthroscopy capabilities, two intraoperative fluoroscopy units, and a 40 slice CT and 3T MRI onsite. In addition, nuclear scintigraphy, force-plate and kinematic gait analysis, and biomechanics and regenerative medicine laboratories are available to facilitate development of novel procedures and treatments. The hospital maintains Mimics and Echopixel licenses for three-dimensional reconstruction and subsequent 3D model printing. The OR is equipped with a wide array of implant systems including multiple locking plate systems, interlocking nails and linear and circular external skeletal fixation sets. The teaching hospital has capable personnel including, but not limited to talented ICU technicians, an active multidisciplinary interventional radiology service, three in-house pharmacists with compounding capability, and a clinical trials coordinator. Construction has begun on the new state of the art 135,000 square foot hospital, with plans for opening in August 2027.

The community of Bryan and College Station have a combined approximate population of 300,000 and are an expanding and diverse metropolitan area with a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities, excellent schools, and a relatively low cost of living.

Qualifications

An applicant must have a DVM (or equivalent) degree and must be a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or must have completed an ACVS-approved residency and have met the requirements to take the corresponding board exam. Applicants must be licensed or eligible for regular or special license to practice veterinary medicine in Texas.
