POSITION:Academic Paraprofessional

SUPERVISOR: MTSS Coordinator, in conjunction with the Principals
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
An academic paraprofessional funded by Title I or Section 31a provides extra instructional help to struggling students - beyond the classroom instruction and support of the General Fund Teacher of Record.
Title I is a federal program for low-income schools, while Section 31a is a Michigan state grant for at-risk students.
Paraprofessionals in both programs are partners in the instructional process and must always work under the direct, meaningful supervision of a certified classroom teacher. They cannot be given full responsibility for independent teaching, grading, or designing assessments.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Title I Requirements: Under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), any instructional paraprofessional must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) AND meet one of three paths:
Section 31a Requirements: The State of Michigan requires a high school diploma or equivalent. The Academy also requires the same qualifications as those paraprofessionals funded with Tite-I funds.
Contract Addendum
The "Supplement, Not Supplant" Rule: funds cannot be used to pay for a paraprofessional position that the district is already required by law to provide (such as a special education aide mandated by a student's IEP). It must strictly provide extra academic support.
Assignments vary by Grade Band and Primary Content Area but all Coaches are required to support teachers in the instruction of College & Career Readiness skills:
