The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) is seeking a full-time, benefits-eligible Academic Advisor to work with undergraduate chemistry, physics, and astronomy majors.
The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Advising Network is made up of over 30 advisors across the college who work closely with students, faculty and staff in their department(s). They are a dynamic team of advisors who collaborate in training, professional development, and advising initiatives. They support and guide their students through academic endeavors, goal development, and engagement, and support the university and collegiate goals from admission through graduation.
CLAS advisors meet regularly with students in a one-on-one setting, providing both in-person and virtual options. The individual in this position will provide academic advising to undergraduate students, collaborate with department leadership, and support recruitment initiatives. Advisors integrate interpersonal and communication skills with knowledge of curricula, academic policies, resources, and student development to help students identify options, set academic and developmental goals, and make progress toward those goals.
Advisors also administer, advocate for, or take a leadership role in programs and initiatives that facilitate student transition, success, and retention or that enhance the overall process of academic advising at the University. They are dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive educational environment and to connecting students with opportunities and resources that enhance both their college experience and future career success.
Advisors support one another through cross-training, programming, and staff development. Furthermore, advisors engage in weekly and monthly developmental activities, fostering a sense of community within the College.
This position is not eligible for University sponsorship for employment authorization.
The position is fully on-site during the training period, after which a hybrid arrangement of 40% remote, 60% on-site, may be arranged.
This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
