    Summary:

    The director of radiology provides administrative, clinical, and operational oversight of radiology services at the designated entity, while also providing health system-level modality leadership based on operational needs. Responsibilities include inpatient and outpatient Radiology services in alignment with the One Penn Radiology vision and the organization's mission and goals. This role ensures safe, high‑quality, patient‑centered care through standardized practices, regulatory compliance, financial stewardship, and collaborative leadership.

     Responsibilities include oversight of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS, DOH, FDA, HIPAA); workforce management encompassing recruitment, onboarding, credentialing, performance management, leadership development, and staff retention; and operational management including policy and procedure development, staffing and scheduling, daily operations, payroll, vendor management, equipment evaluation and procurement, and staff education. 

    The incumbent is accountable for maintaining efficient, cost‑effective delivery of Radiology services, including diagnostic, therapeutic, and patient monitoring activities across inpatient and outpatient settings. Working in close partnership with Medical Directors and enterprise stakeholders, this leader supports research activities, implements CEQI and performance improvement initiatives, and ensures continuous accreditation readiness. Fiscal responsibilities include capital and operating budget planning and variance management in partnership with the Administrative or Senior Director, with a focus on cost containment and continuous improvement.

    Responsibilities:

    Key Accountabilities 

    •  Provide administrative, clinical, and operational oversight of all inpatient and outpatient Radiology services at an entity level, and modality if assigned. 
    •  Ensure continuous compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS, DOH, FDA,ACR, HIPAA). 
    •  Lead workforce management including recruitment, onboarding, credentialing, performance management, engagement, and retention.
    • Partner with Medical Directors and enterprise stakeholders to oversee clinical quality, safety, research, CEQI, and performance improvement initiatives.

    Modality Specific Accountabilities / Manage daily operations including staffing, scheduling, payroll, policies and procedures, vendor relations, and equipment procurement. 

    • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and productivity metrics 
    • Drive patient experience, service excellence, and operational efficiency through data driven decision making. 
    • Develop and manage capital and operating budgets; monitor variances and identify cost saving opportunities. • Maintain continuous accreditation readiness and support regulatory surveys. 
    •  Support quality assurance (QA) and quality improvement (QI) initiatives 
    • Oversee modality safety compliance and policy enforcement 
    •  Advance the One Penn Radiology vision through standardized practices, collaboration, and shared accountability across sites and modalities. 
    • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures •
    • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

    Credentials:

    • Amer Registry Radiologic Tech (Required)
    • Current Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic technologists (ARRT), RDMS, RMSKS, CNMT or RPA
    • Certified Radiology Administrator (Required)
    • Certified Radiology Administrator. Must be obtained within first year upon hire if candidate does not possess a master’s degree.

    Education or Equivalent Experience:

    • Graduate of an accredited Imaging Technology Program At least ten years of supervisory experience.
    • Associate of Arts or Science graduate of an accredited Imaging Technology Program 8+ years At least eight years of supervisory experience. CRA within 1 year of hire
    • Bachelor of Arts or Science, Health Administration, Business Administration (other bachelor’s degrees may be considered) At least six years of supervisory experience. CRA within 1 year of hire.
    • Master of Arts or Science, Health Administration, Business Administration (other master’s degrees may be considered) At least three years of supervisory experience.
    • Graduate of an accredited Imaging Technology Program 10+ years At least ten years of supervisory experience.
