    Description

    Position: 6th Grade Humanities Teacher

    Location: West Valley Middle School

    Qualifications: All qualifications are required unless otherwise indicated.

    • Valid Washington State Teacher's certificate with endorsements in one of the following social studies, history, economics, and/or humanities. Also to possess an endorsement in English if not endorsed in humanities.
    • Additional middle level endorsements preferred
    • Evidence of successful middle level teaching experience.
    • Evidence of training and experience utilizing computer technology for grading, recording attendance, word processing, spreadsheets, Power Point, communicating with e-mail and incorporating these computer technologies into daily classroom use and lesson instruction.
    • Evidence of frequent incorporation of writing within the content area in daily classroom instruction.
    • Evidence of motivating and instructing students of all ability levels.
    • Evidence of providing for student individual learning styles (basic levels and extension beyond basics).
    • Evidence of maintaining a positive, productive learning climate within the classroom as well as with parents and colleagues.
    • Dynamic, student involving, hands-on instruction style.
    • Understanding of the Common Core State Standards
    • Willingness to participate in inclusionary practices (Co-Teach, Co-Plan or other models implemented)
    • Bilingual Preferred

    Job Description:

    • Teach Humanities.
    • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request.
    • All instruction is to meet the Washington State standards in teaching areas as assigned.
    • Create a safe and positive learning environment for all students.
    • Adhere to all West Valley School District and West Valley Middle School policies and expectations for staff and students.
    • Actively engage students in the learning process.
    • Regularly incorporate higher-level thinking and analytical skills in instruction, assessment, and daily performance.
    • Be a team player by establishing and maintaining cooperative professional relationships with others and active participation with the assigned PLC.
    • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
    • Be innovative and committed to the challenge of change in education.
    • Be committed to success for all students.
    • Participate in workshops and training sessions that support building and district programs.
    • Reports regularly to parents and is responsive to parental concerns.
    • Maintains student records including daily grades, attendance reports and others as required.
    • Enforces school rules and monitors student behavior in classroom and non-classroom settings.
    • Implement the requirements of I.D.E.A., Section 504, and A.D.A. in the education of students with disabilities.
    • Alternatives to the above requirements and desirable qualifications may be made as the District finds appropriate and acceptable.

    CLEARANCES: Fingerprint and Background Check; Drug Screening

    CONTRACT: Standard continuing WVSD teacher contract.

    Working Relationships

    Work in partnership with both large and small groups of teachers and other professional staff. Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and teaching staff. Team up with grade-level colleagues to plan lessons, analyze student data, and maintain a focus on continuous improvement. Cooperate with the building administrator in the observation and evaluation process. When working with instructional paraprofessionals, provide appropriate lesson plans and activity supervision. May deal with a wide range of student abilities and behaviors; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.

    Working Conditions

    The daily work is performed in a classroom setting. The job incumbent is often required to stand or sit for prolonged periods, be exposed to a computer display terminal for prolonged periods, and meet externally imposed and inflexible deadlines. May be required to work outdoors in inclement weather; lift, move, and position students and equipment; supervise students, bus loading/unloading; attend to students' personal hygiene; may be required to deal with distraught, angry, or hostile individuals; may need to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids and cleaning or disinfecting compounds; required to work in non-routine positions for extended periods.

    Working Environment

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assist in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job related is performed under a generally hazard-free environment and in a clean atmosphere.
