JOB TITLE: Aide, Bus HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation PAY GRADE: Aux 1/183 Days

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Assist the bus driver in transporting and ensuring the safety of the students with disabilities to and/or from the school campus as well as monitoring student behavior and provide Personal Care Services, Mobility, Cueing/Prompting, Escorting, Positioning, Supervising/Monitoring, and or Transferring, as included in the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). Assisting with the use of specialized and adaptive equipment as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or GED (minimum 19 years of age)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Possess positive attitude toward people and professional situations and can resolve student problems.
  • Exceptional communications, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with student who have special needs or a disability.
  • Ability to manage student behavior.
  • Ability to operate safety and adaptive equipment, including wheelchairs (training provided).
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in speaking, reading, and writing in English. Bilingual in English/Spanish is a bonus.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Provide personal care services during the transition of home and campus for both, arrival and departure times for trips when needed. This includes assisting students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning, buckling of seatbelts, installing and uninstalling car-seats, star-seats, safety vests, ascending and descending stairs.

  1. Responsible for general welfare and safety of all students.

  2. Assists students on and off the bus.

  3. Controls behavior of students on the bus and reports discipline problems as instructed by the supervisor.

  4. Supervises the use of seat belts on the bus.

  5. Works with the driver to ensure good relations with parents, school officials and related parties.

  6. Knowledge of routes to assist a substitute driver.

  7. Demonstrates leadership with proper attendance and punctuality.

  8. Follows the chain of command as noted in organizational policy.

  9. Uses time wisely to ensure productivity and efficiency.

  10. Assist bus driver in conducting pre- and post-trip inspection and in keeping the interior of the bus clean.

  11. Attend all required training, meetings, and in-service events.

  12. Follow emergency procedures and help driver administer first aid if necessary.

  13. Follow all rules, regulations, and policies of CCISD and follow directives from supervisor.

  14. Follow attendance policy as assigned by supervisor and in accordance with CCISD policy and procedures.

Assist students with physical limitations

  1. Provide personal care services during the transition of home and campus for both, arrival & departure times for trip when needed. This includes assisting students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning, buckling of seatbelts, installing and un-installing car-seats, star-seats, safety-vests, ascending and descending stairs.

  2. Operates a wheelchair lift and wheelchair tie downs.

  3. Attends required staff developments and safety meetings.

  4. Handles special children in a professional manner.

  5. Assists driver with paperwork pertaining to the students being transported on buses (i.e., Medicaid forms, eligible rider, mileage forms).

  6. Participate in mandatory Random Moment Time Study as it pertains to the students transported.

  7. Know and understand the importance of confidentiality when it comes to Special Needs students and parents.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Tools/Equipment Used: Specialized and adaptive equipment used by students.

Posture: Frequent standing and sitting; kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting, reaching, and any other movements necessary/needed to assist students with disabilities.

Motion: Frequent walking and reaching.

Lifting: Frequent heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive equipment

Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise and vehicle fumes; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases); work around vehicles and machinery with moving parts; may work irregular or prolonged hours

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
