This recruitment will be used to fill four (4) part-time student assistant positions ( a maximum of 20 hours per week during academic terms and a maximum of 40 hours per week during academic breaks) with the OSU Division of Extension and Engagement's 4-H Youth Development Program.
This position is located in Salem, Oregon, to support the work of the Oregon 4-H Youth Development Program.
The Division of Extension and Engagement's 4-H Youth Development CORE (Camping and Outdoor Recreation Education) Team is seeking enthusiastic individuals to fill four part-time Summer Camp Lifeguards and Educational Development Student Outreach Assistants. These roles offer a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills while leading and managing youth development activities in a dynamic camp environment. Employees will be responsible for planning and facilitating engaging programs, ensuring safety, and mentoring staff and campers.
This position emphasizes personal growth, professional experience, and the ability to lead youth programming and events effectively.
The anticipated hourly pay is $17.50.

Position Duties
Primary Duties:
Lead specialized activities for children, including but not limited to lifeguarding at the pool and pond, running archery activities, and other camp activities and classes.
Implement lesson plans, provide constructive feedback, and maintain safe and engaging learning environments.
Attend orientations, meetings, and in-service training to ensure consistent quality and safety standards.
Complete and submit required documents, such as incident/accident reports, timesheet, project and lesson plans, and maintenance records.
Maintain equipment and supplies inventory to ensure readiness for camp activities.
Administer first aid and follow emergency action steps if medical attention is required.
Leadership Responsibilities:
Develop, implement, and lead youth development events designed to promote character, learning, and teamwork amongst the campers.
Train, guide, and mentor staff and counselors in camp operations, activity facilitation, and youth engagement strategies.
Foster a positive, inclusive environment that encourages teamwork, respect, and creativity among campers and staff.
Cultivate decision-making and problem-solving skills by managing unplanned or time-sensitive situations with confidence and efficiency.
Lead post-event evaluations and provide constructive feedback to improve future programming.
Professional Growth and Leadership Development:
Actively engage in leadership development opportunities through guided mentorship, reflective practice, and on-the-job experience.
Take initiative in identifying areas for program improvement and proposing innovative solutions.
Serve as a role model for campers and staff.
Engage with other counselor leadership activities and trainings as available.
Create a written lesson plan or process for an aspect of camp as chosen by the employee. This can include, but is not limited to:

a written lesson plan for the Low Ropes activity
a written maintenance plan for the pool
a process and checklist of skills for lifeguard in-service days
an archery lesson plan for class time, etc.
Each employee will complete at least one (1) of these projects or lesson plans, to be finalized, implemented, and reviewed by the end of the summer camp season.
Complete other tasks as assigned.
