Description

We are seeking an ASE-certified Heavy Duty Truck Technician to support a private fleet of Class 7-8 tractors, trailers, refrigerated units, dollies, and leased equipment. This diagnostics-focused role operates independently from a fully equipped mobile service van, performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, DOT inspections, and light-to-moderate repairs to keep equipment safe, compliant, and road-ready. Major repairs, including engine overhauls and transmission rebuilds, are routed to approved outside vendors; this position is responsible for accurate diagnosis, in-house repairs when appropriate, and clear documentation for vendor follow-up and cost tracking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMs) and keep fleet equipment DOT-compliant and road-ready.

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot the following systems:

  • Steering

  • Electrical

  • HVAC / refrigeration

  • Drivetrain

  • Brakes (air brake systems)

  • Suspension

  • Perform minor engine repairs (no major engine or overhaul work).

  • Perform minor repairs on leased equipment (e.g., lighting) in addition to owned units.

  • Work independently and coordinate directly with drivers, dispatch, and outside repair vendors to keep equipment moving and minimize downtime.

  • Diagnose faults using standard hand tools, meters, gauges, and manual inspection.

  • Clearly document diagnoses and flag repairs that must be routed to outside vendors, with enough detail for the vendor and for cost tracking.

  • Complete accurate repair orders, parts usage, and labor time in the fleet maintenance system.

  • Conduct and document DOT inspections; ensure all work meets FMCSA and DOT compliance standards.

  • Communicate additional needed repairs to the supervisor before proceeding.

  • Operate a company-provided mobile service van; travel to yards, terminals, and roadside locations to perform work.

  • Maintain the service van, its tools, and parts inventory in a clean, safe, and organized condition in compliance with OSHA and company safety policies.

  • Respond to on-road breakdowns and road calls as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • ASE certification preferred- at minimum ASE Medium/Heavy Truck (T-series); relevant certifications in T4 (Brakes), T5 (Suspension & Steering), T6 (Electrical/Electronic), and T7 (HVAC) strongly preferred.

  • CDL Class A required

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience servicing Class 7-8 heavy-duty trucks and trailers.

  • Strong diagnostic ability across steering, electrical, HVAC, drivetrain, brake, and suspension systems.

  • Working knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations and inspection requirements.

  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and OEM service manuals.

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (required to operate the service van).

  • Own hand tools appropriate to the trade (specialty and diagnostic tools, and the service van, provided by employer).

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision on an evening shift.

Strongly Preferred

  • 609 EPA refrigerant certification for reefer/HVAC work.

  • Air brake certification.

  • Experience with refrigerated trailer units (Thermo King, Carrier).

  • Familiarity with fleet maintenance software and electronic repair-order systems.

  • Completion of a formal diesel technology program or apprenticeship.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly and up to 75 lbs. occasionally.

  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crawl, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.

  • Work performed on-site from a mobile service van - at yards, terminals, and roadside locations - outdoors in varying weather conditions. No fixed shop.

  • Exposure to noise, fumes, and mechanical hazards typical of field-based truck maintenance.

  • Evening shift; occasional overtime or on-call availability based on fleet needs.
