Marine Instructor (MI) General The MI is an employee of the Hickman Mills C1 School District and as such functions as a regular faculty member of Ruskin High School, working directly for the Senior Marine Instructor (SMI) on a daily basis while having an assistant principal as his/her direct supervisor. He/she MI is the primary instructor/teacher for first year cadets, is the main supply point of contact, assists the SMI with administrative tasks, and is usually the head coach of at least the Drill and Color Guard team. As a teacher, the MI is responsible for managing the instruction and assessment for his/her cadets assigned in order to increase student achievement and meet individual needs. Responsibilities and Duties Design and teach lessons which use a variety of instructional strategies leading to student engagement in the learning process in order to enhance student understanding and achievement. Design and/or use a variety of assessment practices to determine student growth and achievement. Maintain a comfortable, respectful and safe classroom environment which cultivates an atmosphere for learning. Carrying out non-teaching professional responsibilities which include but is not limited to communicating with parents/guardians, contributing to the school and district goals. Participate in district and/or building professional development instruction and programs and any self-initiated to improve teaching knowledge and expertise. Follows and implements policies and laws established by Federal, State, local governments, the Hickman Mills C1 School District Board of Education with respect to the MCJROTC program. Assume the primary duty of supply and logistics and assist with administrative functions. Promotes the growth of the program by: establishing rapport and working with high school and middle school counselors and faculty members; establishing contact with civic groups to obtain their recognition and support of the JROTC program; maintaining a cooperative relationship with parents/guardians. Project a positive image to the school's community and surrounding areas at all times. Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for all cadets. Lead an/or assist in coaching various MCJROTC co-curricular activities such as: o Drill and Color Guard Team o Marksmanship Team o Raider or Athletic Team o Community service and fundraising activities and events Carry out other duties assigned by either the SMI, assistant principal, and principal to keep the positive movement of the program forward and does not interfere with the progress of the primary purpose of the program itself. Eligibility Requirements Service Requirements: Have active duty or reserve service in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Commissioned Officer in the pay grades of W-1 through O-6, or as a Non-commissioned Officer (NCO) in the pay grades E-5 through E-9 (E-6 or above for retired members). o Be in a retired or Fleet Reserve status. o Have been approved for retirement under the Temporary Early Retirement Authority (TERA). Marine Instructor (MI) o Have been approved for retirement benefits for a medical disability. o Be an honorably discharged Marine Officer or Enlisted Sergeant or above who has served eight or more years of service and be honorable discharged five or less years from the date of application. o Be an Officer or Enlisted Marine currently serving in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR). Educational and Certification Requirements: o High school graduate. o Have an associates degree or obtain one within five years of initial date of employment as a JROTC instructor. Warrant Officers (WO) and Limited Duty Officers (LDO), who can apply for either MI or SMI positions, are already certified based upon their Marine Corps educational requirements. o Have a JROTC teaching certificate for Missouri or obtain one within two years of initial date of employment as a JROTC instructor. This requires satisfactorily completing six classes required for all Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers within two years of employment. These classes are designed to introduce JROTC instructors to the specifics of teaching at the secondary school level. o Be certified by the Director, MCJROTC to be a MCJROTC instructor. Military Appearance Requirements. Must meet and maintain Marine Corps standards. Physical Fitness. The physical demands may require long periods of standing, walking, hiking, lifting objects 50 lbs or greater and demonstrating physical fitness and marksmanship activities. Additionally, some events may require long days with overnight stays and exposure to varying and adverse weather conditions. Recommendation Requirements. Be recommended by the SMI to the principal for hiring. Terms of Employment The position is a yearly contact with a contract term of "12 months", equaling 260 days of the calendar year. This requires work during the summer, excluding vacation days. It may require travel and overnight stays for week long leadership camps and temporary additional duty for instructor training, or field trips.
