General Function:

The Transportation Operations Specialist supports the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the Transportation Department by coordinating routing, dispatching, and administrative functions. This position ensures safe, timely, and compliant student transportation services by managing routes, schedules, staff assignments, data systems, and department operations.

Education/Training/Experience:

Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent

Three (3) years of experience in transportation operations, bus routes, dispatching, or administrative support

Preferred: Experience in school transportation systems; Bilingual (English/Spanish); New Mexico CDL with appropriate endorsements

Essential Job Functions:

Performs all functions in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, update, and manage bus routes, stops, and schedules using transportation software.
  • Assign students to routes and ensure accuracy of transportation data.
  • Coordinate transportation for special education, field trips, and extracurricular activities.
  • Conduct bus stop reviews and ensure route efficiency and safety.
  • Dispatch drivers and assign routes based on daily needs, absences, and coverage gaps
  • Monitor bus departures, arrivals, delays, and breakdowns.
  • Communicate with drivers via phone and radio to adjust routes as needed.
  • Provide real-time problem-solving for transportation issues.
  • Maintain employee records, certifications, and timesheets.
  • Support payroll processes and track driver hours and activity.
  • Prepare reports, maintain databases, and manage department records.
  • Coordinate meetings, schedules, and communication within the department.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for schools, families, and staff.
  • Respond to inquiries and resolve transportation-related concerns.
  • Support school messaging and communication systems.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies and state regulations.
  • Assist with training staff on transportation systems and procedures.
  • Support safety protocols, including bus camera systems and student management.
  • May drive a bus or serve as a substitute driver/aide as needed.
  • Support department initiatives, planning, and special projects.
  • Frequent computer and communication device usage.
  • Frequent interruptions and fast-paced workflow.
  • Occasional travel and flexible scheduling may be required.

Salary Range and Benefits:

$40,000 - $48,000

Standard office equipment and software platforms such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the Google Suite. Telephone, fax, copier, computer, stamp machine, badge machine, calculator.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

Regularly required to stand; move throughout offices, bus yard, and mechanics shop; communicate verbally and electronically; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb, and balance, and drive. Regularly required to lift or exert force of up to 25 pounds; frequently required to lift or exert force of up to 50 pounds; and occasionally required to lift or exert force of up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include: close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Conditions:

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
