    Qualifications

    Primary Purpose:

    In the absence of the teacher, provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum of 48 or more hours from an accredited university
    • Substitute Teacher Certification within last five years (ACT/RGV, Region One ESC, UTRGV, or STC Substitute Certificate) or a valid Texas Teaching Certificate

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

    Knowledge of subjects assigned

    General knowledge of curriculum and instruction

    Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

    Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

    Ability to provide appropriate distance or virtual instruction to students

    Ability to function as a member of a team

    Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; Bilingual (English/Spanish)

    Ability to utilize technology for documentation, teaching, learning and communication

    Technical Skills, Major Responsibilities, and Duties

    • Assume all responsibilities and duties assigned to the classroom teacher.
    • Implement lesson plans provided by the classroom teacher that fulfill the requirements of District's curriculum program.
    • Implement classroom teacher designed lesson plans that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles, use appropriate instructional strategies and materials.
    • By following teacher lesson plans, present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
    • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curriculum as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
    • Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aides(s) when necessary.
    • Be a positive role model for students, support mission of school district.
    • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students.
    • Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and abide by employee handbook.
    • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
    • Establish and maintain open communication and professional relationship with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
    • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
    • Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
    • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required (examples may include but not limited to grading papers, completing attendance procedures, and filling out substitute teacher report).
    • Record and turn in money to the office that was collected during the day.
    • Report all student injuries, accidents, and illnesses to appropriate authority immediately.
    • Report all suspected abuse to CPS/police and the principal.
    • Maintain confidentiality regarding students and staff personnel information.
    • Perform other duties as may be assigned.

    Mental and Physical Demands / Environmental Factors:

    Maintain emotional control under stress.

    Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending; move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment and other classroom equipment.

    Substitute teacher is regularly required to speak, hear and use hands to manipulate, file or sort objects.

    While performing the duties of this job, the substitute teacher occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions and wet (humid) conditions.
