Position Summary
The Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing instructional continuity in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The substitute implements lesson plans, maintains a safe and orderly learning environment, supervises students, and promotes student learning while adhering to Boone County Schools policies, West Virginia Department of Education regulations, and applicable state laws.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Carry out instructional plans and classroom activities prepared by the regular teacher whenever available.
- Maintain a positive, safe, and orderly classroom environment conducive to learning.
- Supervise students in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, playground, assemblies, and other assigned areas.
- Take attendance and maintain accurate records as required.
- Establish and maintain appropriate student behavior using district-approved classroom management strategies.
- Follow all school policies, procedures, emergency protocols, and safety regulations.
- Protect the confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with federal and state laws.
- Communicate professionally with administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parents when appropriate.
- Report student accidents, injuries, discipline concerns, or unusual incidents to the building administrator promptly.
- Leave written documentation for the regular teacher regarding lessons completed, student progress, attendance, and any significant events.
- Utilize classroom technology and instructional materials appropriately.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
Minimum Qualifications
- Meets all qualifications established by the West Virginia Department of Education for substitute teachers.
- Holds a valid West Virginia Substitute Teaching Permit or Professional Teaching Certificate, as applicable.
- High school diploma, bachelor's degree, or other educational qualifications as required by West Virginia law and State Board policy.
- Successful completion of all required background checks and employment screenings.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

- Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies.
Working Conditions
The Substitute Teacher works in a school environment and may be assigned to elementary, middle, or high schools. Assignments may vary daily and may include general education, special education, or other instructional settings.
Terms of Employment
Employment is on an as-needed substitute basis. Compensation shall be established by the Boone County Board of Education in accordance with applicable West Virginia Code, Board policy, and the approved substitute salary schedule.
Evaluation
Performance shall be evaluated by the Building Principal or designee in accordance with Boone County Schools policies and procedures.
