Job Summary:
This posting is for a Federal Work Study position. To be eligible for WorkStudy positions you must maintain enrollment in at least six (6) credits at LBCC, maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout each term, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better (some positions may require a higher GPA), and have financial aid in place.
SMART is an early literacy program that helps pre-kindergarten through third grade students in low-income schools learn to read. The SMART Reader Work Study student works with children and their teachers to develop reading/literacy skills. SMART helps provide students with the early literacy foundation they need to succeed in school and later in life.
Essential Duties:
- Building relationships with young children to build a love of reading
- Read to and with PCDC students; modeling the enjoyment of reading. Work Study students are assigned to read with the students as supervisor assigns.
- Select appropriate books with PCDC students.
- Complete daily activity logs.
- Assisting Supervisor/Back up Supervisor when needed
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Hours vary with the site.
- Work is predominantly indoors in a child care center with little to no exposure to health hazards.
- Intermittent work may be outside with possible exposure to typical Oregon weather.
- Frequent interruptions are to be expected, some individual time may be allotted with children while under the direct visual supervision of a Lead Teacher employed by the site.
- Bending, squatting, sitting, standing, walking, carrying and lifting are included in daily activities.
- Interaction with children, parents, and staff members is daily.
- Considerable amount of variable levels of concentration with frequent or constant interruptions.
Education and Experience
- Must maintain enrollment in at least 6 credits at LBCC, maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout each term, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better, and have financial aid in place to be eligible to work in a Work Study student employee capacity at Linn-Benton Community College.
- Certificates and Licensing:
- Must pass a fingerprint background check with Oregon's Central Background Registry (CBR).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Work Study students must have a proficient level of reading, and should be able to effectively relate and work well with young children.
- Work Study students are advocates for children and have a belief that all children can learn the fundamental skills to be a reader.
