Writing Center consultants support academic progress of students by identifying writing challenges and reinforcing critical thinking. They identify learning challenges, provide academic insight, and develop writing skills with students by working with them one-on-one on writing assignments across courses.
Reports To Director of Library Services Education/Qualifications
- Good Conduct and Academic Standing with the college - cumulative GPA of 3.0+
- Sheridan College Student, currently enrolled
- Recommendation from an English instructor
- Submission of writing samples prior to interview
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Personable, reliable, confident, and able to work independently
- Interpersonal skills demonstrated by effective oral and written communication
- Ability to creatively engage students in learning course content, developing study strategies, and demonstrating time management skills
- Competency with formatting styles including MLA and APA
- Experience with various writing styles: argumentative, persuasive, informative, instructional, narrative, etc.
- Apply new instructional and tutoring techniques to improve consultations
- Aptitude for generating positive learning outcomes from one-on-one interactions with peer
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Tutoring sessions take place in Kooi Library, Monday through Friday, working with your class schedule. In some cases, tutoring can be remote or on another location on Sheridan Campus with directors' approval.

Job Duties
These are the job duties for required of the position.
Percentage of time 100% Responsibility/Duty
- Consult on writing assignments across a variety of subjects and formatting styles and work with individual clients to identify and rectify writing issues.
- Provide verbal and written feedback on drafts to guide revisions in both face-to-face and online sessions
- Keep accurate records of tutoring sessions, client reports, and ensure sessions are entered in the tracking system
- Attend required training and complete assigned tutorials for professional development
- Support students with various learning abilities and generate referrals to appropriate campus resources
- Maintain FERPA compliance
