Job Summary:

This posting is for a pooled position. Application submissions for "[POOL]" positions are accepted on an ongoing basis to ensure a continuous and ready pool of qualified candidates for immediate review when the need arises. Assists and supports the Machine Tool faculty in teaching introductory CNC (Computer Numerical Control) operation skills to first year machining students. Assists in maintaining a safe, clean, and orderly shop area. Assists all students and faculty in using safe practices to complete class projects.

Essential Duties:

  • Consults with class instructor on daily assignments and tasks and assists students in completing in class assignments on CNC Mills and Lathes.

  • Monitors students to ensure they follow proper safety procedures, use proper personal protective equipment and follow proper procedures to protect equipment, themselves and others in the shop.

  • Assists or tutors students in the completion of assigned class projects by observing the student performing the assigned tasks and asking questions of the student to ensure the student knows the correct materials, tools, equipment and methods to complete the assignment. This includes performing designated tasks to provide individual assistance to students as necessary.

  • Share with students knowledge and lessons you have learned from working in the machining industry.

  • Assist instructor/other IA's with setup, breakdown and cleanup of equipment and the shop area in general.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Physical Skills and Abilities: Requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate equipment. Physical ability to stand for extended periods of time while operating or monitoring machine tool equipment. Requires sufficient hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and operate shop machines and measuring instruments. Lifting of light to medium weight (10 to 50 pounds).

Working Conditions: Work is performed in college shops and classrooms. Some exposure to safety and health hazards exists as expected in a normal machine tool shop, such as those associated with electrical and mechanical equipment.

Education and Experience

Position requires an AA/AS degree in a skilled discipline such as Machine Tool Technology or related area and a minimum of 1 year full-time related industry experience; or four years of related industry experience with industry sponsored in-service education and train the trainer programs; or an equivalent combination of formal training and experience.

Industry certifications may substitute for education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge and Skills: Must possess technical knowledge and skills in the safe use of CNC machines. Requires working knowledge of safety practices and proper operation of tools and equipment common to machine tool industry shops. Strong communication skills required in order to interact with and assist students.

Abilities: Ability to safely and efficiently operate CNC mills, lathes and precision measuring instruments. Requires the ability to set up student projects which meet the instructional goals of faculty. Ability to function independently. Must be able to communicate in both formal and informal settings with students, instructors, and other interested parties.

Compensation Information:

All Part-time Classified employees begin at Step 1 of the salary schedule, corresponding to the position's grade. Placement at a higher step on the salary schedule is not negotiable. Step increases are subject to eligibility, and only take place at the end of the Fiscal Year in July if approved and submitted by the employee's supervisor of record. Hours worked in more than one position or department cannot be combined for step advancement. Part-time Classified employees are paid once monthly, on the last day of the month.
