Position Description

The Nursing Instructor is responsible for student success by creating an optimum learning environment. The full-time nursing faculty participates in the planning, implementation, evaluation and revision of the program curriculum. The position is responsible for quality instruction and for effective participation in total affairs of the college. The position could be assigned to the Associate Degree in Nursing (A.D.N.) or Practical Nursing program based on current college needs.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides instruction to introduce students to the nursing industry and prepare them for entry-level positions in the medical field.
  • Develop course syllabi, outlines, and lesson plans for curriculum courses assigned.
  • Review appropriate textbooks and instructional materials and media for the classes to be taught.
  • Develops lectures, classroom activities, and hands-on exercises for students to participate and learn.
  • Monitors and records student progress in courses.
  • Administers tests or other evaluation methods to students.
  • Keeps records of student attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Serve on college committees as assigned
  • Assists in the recruitment, orientation, registration, retention, placement, and follow-up of students.
  • Keep regular posted office hours as approved by the department chair.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to communicate effectively with students and colleagues in person and through electronic means. The role involves standing and/or walking for extended periods during classroom instruction and sitting for prolonged periods while preparing instructional materials, grading assignments, and completing administrative tasks. The employee must be able to use standard office and instructional equipment, including computers, keyboards, and classroom technology. Visual ability to read and review both written and electronic materials is required, along with manual dexterity to operate classroom and office equipment. The position may also require occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 20-25 pounds, such as instructional materials, books, or equipment.

Work is typically performed in a classroom, office, or laboratory environment and involves frequent interaction with students, faculty, and staff. Student demographics may include high school and adult populations. The role may include evening, weekend, or online teaching assignments and may require travel to off-site instructional locations, conferences, or hands-on live projects based on the program area. Some positions may require driving a school vehicle to transport students to hands-on live projects and will require a clean driving record. Depending on the discipline, work may involve exposure to instructional technology, laboratory equipment, or vocational tools. The position operates in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and competing deadlines, and requires maintaining a flexible schedule to meet instructional and institutional needs.

Qualifications & Degree Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Masters degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Must obtain graduate degree in nursing from accredited institution within 5 years.
  • Prior to or within 3 years of employment, must have education in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to faculty assignment.
  • Unrestricted RN license to practice in NC
  • 2 years of medical/surgical or nursing experience required
  • Previous teaching experience preferred
  • CPR Instructor Certification preferred.
