Duties & Responsibilities

(NOTE: denotes Essential Functions)

• Operates advanced analytical instruments according to established methods.
• Safely and consistently prepares samples for analysis.
• Records and maintains instrument logs.
• Ensures that reagents and standards are properly prepared, maintained and stored.
• Ensures that waste generated are properly stored and disposed.
• Cleans and maintains glassware according to established methods.
• Performs basic troubleshooting of laboratory instruments.
• Serve as main lab contact person when primary contact is on leave.
• Corresponds with and provides support to lab users and customers.
• Works with research faculty, graduate students and other research personnel to implement project objectives, evaluate research progress, and interpret results.
• Other Duties As Assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• Possession of a pertinent baccalaureate educational degree with extensive coursework or experience in analytical chemistry; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
• Research experience in a field (such as chemistry, environmental engineering, soil science, groundwater hydrology, environmental biochemistry, or microbiology) that utilizes trace organics and inorganics analyses.
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, procedures and techniques used in research and experimental laboratory work.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Ability to perform repetitive lab work with high level of consistency.
• Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
• Ability to prepare clear, legible, research and laboratory notes.
• Ability to prioritize workloads with respect to sample holding time and instrument availability.

Desirable Qualifications

• Advanced research experience utilizing various sample preparation and extraction techniques (such as liquid-liquid extraction, solid phase extraction, accelerated solvent extraction, purge and trap, acid digestion).
• Advanced research experience utilizing capillary gas chromatography (electron capture, flame ionization, mass spectrometry), high performance liquid chromatography (UV/Vis, fluorescence, mass spectrometry), ion chromatography, and liquid/solid total carbon analyses (organic, inorganic, non-purgeable organic).
• Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic, in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
• Advanced troubleshooting and repair of analytical equipment.
• Development of analytical methods and safety protocols.
