About the Program

The successful candidate will join a Criminal Justice program that provides a comprehensive education where students develop the academic and professional skills needed to be successful in both the criminal justice workforce and at four-year academic universities. Pierce College offers an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, as well as various stackable short certificates, including Forensics and Crime Analysis & Investigations. In our program, students gain the knowledge and competency necessary for a professional career working within the criminal justice field in a variety of settings. The program combines high academic rigor steeped in criminology and social theory with professional standards of the justice field. This program works closely with local, state, private, tribal, and federal agencies to provide hands-on training though mandatory internships. The Pierce College Criminal Justice program has emphasis in law enforcement, forensics, corrections, security, pre-law, juvenile justice, and victimology. This is a program where there is space for all.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities of the successful candidate include:

  • The successful candidates responsibilities include.
  • Teaching a wide range of courses that focus on criminal justice issues grounded in theory and supported by professional practice. Each course is an opportunity to bridge criminal and social justice theory through historical and current issues and teaching methodology.
  • Demonstrating knowledge and application of adult learning theories, as well as current criminology and social justice theories and practices.
  • Demonstrating multicultural competence, including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations, and creating an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity and diversity.
  • Analyzing course assessments, evaluations, and data and engaging in continuous improvement of courses based on that analysis in order to advance student achievement of outcomes, success in subsequent courses, and impact on retention and graduation.
  • Continuously innovating learning experiences (campus, online, hybrid) in response to assessment and evidence/data analysis.
  • Setting the stage for a high level of student engagement.
  • Creatively designing learning experiences that extend beyond delivering content and assisting students in achieving course, program, and degree outcomes, including the colleges five core abilities of Multiculturalism, Critical, Creative and Reflective Thinking, Information Competency, Responsibility, and Effective Communication.
  • Teaching, advising, and mentoring students holistically from recruitment to completion; Engaging in shared governance.
  • Participating in the First-Year Faculty Cohort in the first year of the tenure process.
  • Partnering with outside criminal justice and advocacy agencies.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Criminal Justice or related field (or in process) with completion before tenure can be granted and
  • Five years full-time experience in the criminal justice field (or equivalent combination of full- and part- time)

Special Requirements

Must provide or be able to attain and maintain a clean criminal history background check.

Terms of Employment

This position, which is contingent upon funding, is a full-time, tenure-track assignment of 174 contracted days per year with the tenure process starting in September 2027. Assignment may include district discipline/program coordination, as well as evening, hybrid, and/or online teaching. This is a District position with a "home" campus assignment. Initial placement of this position will be at the Fort Steilacoom campus. Candidates will be working for a District Dean and will be required to attend district meetings as well as collaborate with colleagues across the district and across departments. This position requires regular and consistent attendance.

Salary & Benefits

Initial salary placement is based on the current full-time faculty salary schedule and is dependent upon education and experience. Salary placement for newly hired full-time faculty will be at one of five levels based upon qualifications including teaching experience and credentials. The five levels range from $77,095 to $83,223 per 174-day academic year.

While not guaranteed, full-time faculty may have the opportunity for additional income during the academic year and summer through additional teaching. These opportunities are based on a variety of considerations including: student needs, balanced schedules, faculty preference and other appropriate factors.

Full-time faculty may receive an annual COLA equal to that allocated by the state. Newly tenured faculty members will receive a $2,000 salary increase starting in the first year of their tenure. Insurance Benefits

Leave

Full-time faculty accrue one compensable sick day per month while under annual contract and one non-compensable sick day per month when not under annual contract, as well as 4 personal leave days per year.

Tuition Reimbursement

Full-time faculty may take space-available classes for $5 per quarter with the Tuition Waiver program.
