Job Overview

This is a hybrid role requiring 2 days in the office per week, located in Oakland. A laptop will be provided, and any other tools must be vendor-provided. The position falls under the Engineering/Science job category and is an individual contributor role within the Strategy & Growth business unit.

Department Overview

The Electric Engineering department is responsible for ensuring all aspects of electric engineering are in place to support Electric Operations. This includes electric standards and process safety, electric design engineering, instrumentation testing and controls, undergrounding, electric regulatory compliance, and electric investment planning. The department consists of approximately 2,000 coworkers and is accountable for program planning, financial budgeting, and project execution and delivery of all electric engineering projects.

Position Summary

This senior-level engineering position is represented by Engineers and Scientists of California (ESC) and is subject to collective bargaining. The role requires mastery of journey engineer duties and involves leading engineering and design of complex projects. The individual will apply extensive knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices to resolve complex problems with only general direction. Responsibilities include leadership, coaching, technical direction, knowledge transfer, and assistance to technical employees and teams. Additional duties include delivering presentations, leading team meetings, and interpreting industry practices and codes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage large complex projects and perform engineering analyses, studies, and develop conceptual designs.
  • Lead, coach, direct, and assist technical employees and teams on technical issues. May act as an engineering mentor.
  • Assist in finalizing contract project specification and technical evaluation of contract project bids.
  • Provide support to other departments in land, permitting, and legal issues.
  • Resolve problems of complex scope, with opportunities for creative or non-standard approaches.
  • Independently plan work to meet assigned general objectives under general direction.
  • Engage with external contacts such as contractors, vendors, and local public agencies, and internal contacts including clients, project team members, and company management.
  • May provide technical direction to less experienced team members and exchange information to solve problems with others outside the team.

Qualifications

  • Minimum:
    • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited curriculum in the US or equivalent from outside the US.
    • 8 years of cumulative experience in electrical engineering and design.
  • Desired:
    • Experience in multiple large-scale, large budget electric substation projects.
    • Experience in substation engineering.
    • Skilled in project management.
    • Current California PE license.
