Job Description - Transportation Special Services Specialist

Primary Function: Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, develops and manages routing/scheduling for students identified as having special needs, discipline related to students with special needs, and special projects. Attends ARD meetings as needed.

Responsibilities/Duties: Prepares and updates bus routes and schedules for all students identified as having special needs in the district and develops plans to meet future transportation needs Attends ARD meetings as necessary Coordinates and schedules summer program routes Notifies bus drivers and public of any changes in bus routes and schedules Compiles, maintains, files and presents all reports, records, and other documents required in the transportation area Complies with applicable personnel policies Assist with State reporting (SPED mileage) and verifies accuracy Requests purchases and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies Reviews student behavior reports to ensure quality of reports by drivers. Schedules and leads conferences with parents, students, and drivers on disciplinary issues for SPED students. Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of: Transfinder Software Special needs specific training and pupil management Record keeping and office procedures Oral and written communication skills Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy Operation of a computer and assigned software District and department policies and procedures Relevant federal and state laws and requirements

Ability to: Operate a school bus, safety equipment (medical kit, reflective triangles, etc.), and fire extinguisher Coordinate district transportation functions Implement policy and procedures Receive and give verbal instructions effectively Work independently with little direction Communicate effectively both orally and in writing Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others Maintain regular and consistent attendance Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action Meet schedules and timelines Plan and organize work

Education/Licenses/Experience: High School diploma or equivalent. Must have and maintain a Texas commercial driver's license (CDL) with all appropriate endorsements and classifications and all other required licenses, permits and certifications . Ability to pass Texas DPS school bus driver physical examination . Ability to pass pre -employment and other drug/alcohol testing as required . Acceptable driving record as defined by the Texas DPS . Two years of experience with transportation of special needs students, preferably with public schools. Minimum of three years of experience as a school bus driver in a public-school district, preferred.

Working Conditions: Mental Demands: Self -motivated, perform tasks with little or no supervision; work with frequent interruptions; able to manage multiple complex projects concurrently; maintain em otional control under stress; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); coordinate district support functions.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Lifting/carrying - 15-44 pounds; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping/ crouching/kneeling, pulling/pushing, reaching; repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer; speaking clearly; occasional district -wide, state-wide travel; work occasional irregular hours and prolonged hours.

Calendar and Salary Range: 225 work days. See current pay grade on the Transportation Compensation plan.
