Senior Software Engineer – Java/AWS

Hybrid – Chicago, IL or Peoria, IL (2 Days Onsite/Week)

Position Overview

This position reports to the Software Engineering Manager, alongside other staff within the application and technical systems and programming organization. Responsibilities fall within functional lines, with the individual contributing to new program development and/or maintenance of existing mobile, web, cloud, server, and computing systems.

Key Contributions & Responsibilities

  • Competent to perform all programming, development, integration, and system administration assignments without close supervision.
  • Designs, codes, tests, and debugs programs of high complexity.
  • Configures and customizes purchased software solutions of high complexity.
  • Provides project management, programming, systems, and/or system administration leadership, guidance, and assistance to other team members.
  • Works on complex application and technical problem identification and resolution, including responding to off-shift and weekend support calls as needed.
  • Works independently on complex processes and modules that may be used across one or more programs, systems, or in support of infrastructure component change management.
  • Develops major system modules, programs, or infrastructure releases based on requirements gathered from system customers.
  • Performs integrated testing and customer acceptance testing of system components, requiring careful planning and execution to ensure timely, quality results.
  • Performs integration tasks for in-house developed systems and/or purchased hardware and software solutions; assists customers with documentation, training, and usability efforts.
  • Maintains full knowledge of programming languages appropriate to the platform supported, along with program design and specification development, programming logic, logic diagrams, system analysis techniques, testing, debugging, documentation standards, file design, storage, and internal systems.

Team Structure & Work Environment

Works as part of an Agile/Scrum team, with significant interaction required across all Scrum ceremonies, including Daily Standups, Sprint Planning, Grooming, Retrospectives, and Demos. Regularly engages with the team on PR reviews and collaborates with other teams as needed. The role requires strong collaboration in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Candidate Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, and 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Master's degree and 6+ years of relevant experience.

Technical Skills

  • Extensive experience designing, developing, and maintaining Java-based software applications at scale.
  • 3+ years of experience developing in AWS, including CloudFormation templates, ECS cluster deployment, Lambda, Fargate, Amazon Elasticsearch, and S3; strong understanding of IAM roles and policies.
  • Experience leveraging Generative AI tools in software development.
  • 3+ years of experience building and deploying software with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Experience developing software applications using relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Familiarity with application architectural patterns such as MVC, Microservices, and Event-driven architecture.
  • Experience deploying software using CI/CD tools such as Jenkins or Azure DevOps.
  • Experience working within an Agile framework, ideally Scrum.
  • Strong understanding of and/or experience with batch or stream processing systems such as AWS SQS, AWS SNS, and Kinesis.
  • Experience designing well-defined RESTful APIs.
  • Hands-on experience with API tools such as Swagger, Postman, and Assertible.
  • Experience with test-driven development (TDD) and behavior-driven development (BDD).
  • Hands-on experience with testing tools such as Selenium and Cucumber, including their integration into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with datastores such as DynamoDB, MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, Elasticsearch, MySQL, and Oracle.
  • Solid knowledge of computer science fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms.
