JOB DESCRIPTION:

Livonia Public Schools is seeking a passionate and student centered Orientation and Mobility Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate is a proactive, highly organized, and collaborative professional dedicated to supporting students who are blind, have low vision, or have functional visual limitations. This position requires a strong commitment to fostering independence, access, and meaningful participation for students ages 326 across educational and community environments through specialized instruction and consultation services. The successful candidate will assess students' orientation and mobility needs, develop recommendations, and provide services tailored to each student's individual goals, travel environments, and visual prognosis as part of the IEP and IFSP processes. Responsibilities include conducting individualized evaluations, interpreting and communicating assessment findings, collaborating with families and multidisciplinary teams, and supporting the implementation of assistive technology and mobility devices to promote student success and independence.

DISTRICT OVERVIEW

Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,800 staff members, serving approximately 13,100 students pre-K post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center and 1 vocational and transition center in the School District. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $180 million, with a state funding of $10,000 per pupil.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following represents the minimum qualifications for this position. The District reserves the right to waive any qualification at its discretion.

  • Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited university or college
  • Valid Orientation and Mobility Specialist Certificate (COMS) from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)
  • Knowledge of current state and federal mandates related to instruction of students with disabilities
  • Ability to build and maintain positive, respectful relationships with students, families, and colleagues
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and teamwork skills
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use student data to inform instruction, monitor progress and provide intervention/enrichment
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive environment that supports diverse learners

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Champion the District's mission, vision, and collective commitments by placing students and their learning at the center of all decisions
  • Build strong relationships with students and establish clear expectations that support a respectful and productive learning environment
  • Actively participates in and contributes to professional learning teams (PLT) as part of the school improvement process at the district and school level
  • Monitor student learning through ongoing assessment, maintain accurate records, and communicate student progress to families in a timely and meaningful way
  • Actively engage families as partners through consistent, clear, and collaborative communication
  • Use district technology and instructional tools to support teaching, learning, and communication
  • Maintain professional growth through ongoing learning, reflection, and participation in district and self-selected professional development, including keeping teacher certification current
  • Supervise students and ensure their safety and well-being throughout the school day and during assigned duties
  • Follow all District policies, procedures, and expectations, including Board of Education policy and administrative procedures
  • Travel to the students' assigned schools and/or homes to provide direct and/or consultative services.
  • Perform orientation and mobility initial and re-evaluations that focus on long- and short-term needs of the student.
  • Create data-driven evaluation reports that include information on student needs and strengths, the educational impact of the results, and the determined service frequency and duration.
  • Contribute to other appropriate portions of the IEP, such as goals and objectives and supplementary aids and services.
  • Provide consultation and support services to parents, educators, other team members, and students' sighted peers.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, classroom teachers, physical education teachers, physical therapists, and other school personnel to assist in home and classroom modifications to ensure reinforcement of appropriate orientation and mobility skills.
  • Work with the teacher of students with visual impairments to conduct the functional vision assessment as it relates to independent travel.
  • Evaluate the student's progress on an ongoing basis and keep progress notes on each student.
  • Prepares, monitors and communicates IEP goals, supplementary aids and services and goal progress reports per state and federal guidelines
  • Participates in individualized educational planning and placement committees to assist in the identification, placement, and program planning for students with disabilities
  • Maintains student records in accordance with school, district, state, and federal guidelines and statutes
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field by reading journals and publications, attending professional development, seminars or conferences, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide a safe and productive educational environment
  • Identify student needs and works collaboratively with other professional staff members in assessing and assisting students
  • Communicate with students, parents and school staff on student progress
  • Analyze tasks relative to areas of occupation, performance skills, activity demands, contexts and student factors to implement the intervention plan
  • Maintain safe therapeutic equipment by monitoring wear and condition, and recommending repair or replacement as needed.
  • Comply with confidentiality and FERPA
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administrator

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current agreement between the Board of Education and the Livonia Education Association. This position will remain open minimally through July 8, 2026 for consideration of employment for the 26-27 school year.
