CRITICAL SKILLS / EXPERTISE:ā¢Shall be capable of operating both as a member of a team and working independently at incidents of uncertain duration.ā¢Shall be capable of physically and emotionally coping with highly stressful situations.ā¢Shall be capable of using a variety of hand tools.ā¢Shall be capable of using a self-contained breathing apparatus.ā¢Shall be capable of working in a hazardous environment and being exposed to the many hazards encountered on a fire, medical, and any other emergency scene.ā¢Shall be capable of operating portable fire extinguishers.ā¢Shall be capable of working with ropes and tying certain knots used in the fire service.ā¢Shall be capable of handling highly pressurized fire hoses.ā¢Shall be capable of safely operating portable power equipment, such as a chain saw.ā¢Shall be capable of clearly communicating on a two-way radio, and on the telephone.ā¢Shall be capable of passing the departmentās job-related physical performance evaluation.ā¢Shall have the ability to medically treat all patients without bias to sex, age, race, culture, religion, etc.ā¢Detect the presence of fire and/or smoke using the senses of sight, smell, or touch.ā¢Visually inspect buildings and fire equipment and visually examine the physical conditions of accident victims.ā¢Possess sufficient visual acuity in order to function optimally in dense smoke and darkness.ā¢Sufficiently hear instructions and commands while wearing protective headgear at fire and emergency scenes.ā¢Shall have acute hearing in order to locate somebody during a search and rescue, when a verbal or electronic signal is emitted.ā¢Balance on ice, oil, and water slick surfaces as may be encountered in the course of firefighting and rescue operations, and fire safety inspections.ā¢Understand the theories of fire science, fire safety and prevention, and emergency medical training, and apply theoretical knowledge on a practical level.ā¢Work cooperatively with subordinates, supervisors, and the public under extremely stressful conditions, including situations of a life-threatening nature.ā¢Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.ā¢Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, and the public.ā¢Utilize personal computers, including word processing software, calculator, copy and fax utilities, phone, mobile phone, mobile and portable radios, and automobiles. ESSENTIAL ROLES amp; RESPONSIBLILITIES: May include, but not limited to the following:ā¢Responds to fire alarms.ā¢Communicates clearly and effectively utilizing various types of radios.ā¢Wears a self-contained breathing apparatus, fire gear, protective head gear and other gear that may weigh over twenty-five pounds or more, for long periods of time during fire and EMS operations.ā¢Fire suppression and all fire suppression operations.ā¢Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris.ā¢Responds to and renders assistance in all emergency situations.ā¢Cleans and inspects equipment and apparatus after returning from a fire, prior to the start of shift, or as the job requires.ā¢Inspects equipment and apparatus and notifies superior officer of any defects.ā¢Makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus, performs routine preventative maintenance tasks, and keeps records of such action.ā¢Keeps fire station, equipment and grounds in a clean and orderly condition.ā¢Participates in training activities and instructional sessions.ā¢Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the township including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items.ā¢Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with Colerain Township and Colerain Fire Departmentās, policies and procedures.ā¢Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions.
