Work schedule is Monday - Friday, 4pm - 9pm

Under general supervision, plans, organizes, and instructs a program to teach fundamentals of gymnastics to participants of all skill levels from tots to 18 years of age.

Positions in this class are flexibly linked and are normally filled by advancement from Assistant Youth Coach or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience.

This is the journey-level class in the Assistant Youth Coach/Youth Coach series. Incumbents entering this class have previous directly related work experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Designs, prepares, plans, and implements drills for practices, workouts, classes, and/or training.

Sets up and tears down equipment as needed.

Monitors participant attendance against rosters to ensure all payments are received. May collect and forward entry forms and birth certificates.

Instructs sport-relevant skills to participants of various ability levels and age groups.

Communicates and enforces facility and class policies and procedures. Ensures all possible safety measures are observed. Identifies and reports any hazards.

Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants and/or parents to answer questions and resolve problems.

Responds to emergency situations as required; maintains and forwards accurate accident and incident reports to supervisor.

Reports any issues and concerns to supervisor.

Attends trainings and meetings as required.

Complies with city and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.

Substitutes for other Coaches as needed.

May coordinate weekly matches.

May lead and/or train other Coaches.

May organize and supervise childrens parties at one of the citys recreational facilities, including set-up and decorating.

May be required to work weekends and holidays.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Gymnastics Coach

In addition to duties listed above

Performs appropriate spotting of gymnasts.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Requires a minimum of two years coaching experience at a competitive level in recreation or a private club or one year as a city of Thornton Gymnastics Instructor II. College level experience in the specific sport, either playing or coaching is preferred.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certificates, or the ability to obtain both within 30 days of hire. Valid CARA or USAG safety certification or the ability to obtain within one year of hire date.

May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.

Knowledge of the specific sport assignment.

Knowledge of coaching the specific sport being taught.

Knowledge of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid.

Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid activities.

Skill in instructing and demonstrating fundamental sports skills to participants of all abilities.

Ability to demonstrate the specific sport being taught.

Ability to effectively teach, lead, and coordinate classes and/or training.

Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.

Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.

Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.

Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with participants, parents, coaches, sports officials, and the public.

Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.

Ability to provide necessary spotting if assigned gymnastic coaching.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, make repetitive motions, and repeatedly twist the upper body. The position is considered medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have visual acuity to make general observations; and must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions. The employee may be exposed to various indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including being in the sun and heat. The employee may also be subject to loud noise.
