Job Summary
The Youth Apprentice Lab Assistant is a structured learning position designed to introduce high school students to clinical laboratory operations and healthcare careers. Under direct supervision, the apprentice gains hands-on experience in patient interaction, specimen handling (such as blood, urine, etc.), laboratory processes, safety standards, and professional workplace expectations. The primary goal of this role is skill development, career exploration, and foundational understanding of laboratory science within a healthcare environment.
What you will do
- Assist with preparing patients and lab areas for specimen collection and observe trained staff performing procedures.
- Review test orders and confirm specimen requirements.
- Learn to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adult, neonatal, and pediatric patients by observing trained staff.
- Assist with identifying and labeling specimens and once properly trained and with a qualified lab assistant nearby, perform collections under supervision while ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Support patient check-in, basic information, and assist with order entry in lab computer systems.
- Assist with simple lab tests under supervision.
- Provide general administrative and customer service support, including answering phones and maintaining logs or files.
- Help maintain lab readiness by cleaning work areas, restocking supplies, and assisting with equipment organization.
Education Qualifications
- High school student in the grade level junior or senior.
- Participating in the Youth Apprenticeship program in accordance with school criteria.
