In Tennessee, a dual-role high school teacher for World History and Physical Education is responsible for providing academic instruction in social studies and promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyles according to Tennessee State Board of Education standards.  

Core Teaching Responsibilities
  • World History Instruction: Design and deliver lessons covering global history from the Renaissance to the present, focusing on inquiry-based models that develop critical thinking, investigation, and reasoning skills.
  • Physical Education & Wellness: Plan and implement activities that promote motor skills, team sports, and lifelong fitness. Instruction often includes health education topics like anatomy, nutrition, and first aid.
  • Curriculum Alignment: Ensure all instructional units meet Tennessee Academic Standards for both Social Studies and Physical Education.
  • Assessment & Data Analysis: Administer state-mandated and classroom-based assessments to monitor student progress, using data to create targeted intervention plans for student growth.
  • Classroom Management: Maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive environment, whether in a traditional classroom or a gymnasium setting.
Administrative & Professional Duties
  • Communication: Proactively engage with parents regarding student performance and conduct through conferences and progress reports.
  • Collaboration: Participate in professional learning communities (PLCs), faculty meetings, and bi-weekly coaching cycles with school leadership.
  • Safety Protocols: Ensure all physical activities follow strict safety guidelines and that equipment is properly maintained.
  • Non-Instructional Duties: Perform assigned school-based duties such as lunch supervision, hallway transitions, or arrival/dismissal monitoring
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Education: A minimum of a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Licensure: A valid Tennessee Teaching License with appropriate endorsements for both Secondary History (grades 6-12) and Physical Education (K-12).
  • Certifications: Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are typically required for PE roles.
  • Clearances: Successful completion of a TBI/FBI criminal background check and fingerprinting.
