Summary of Role:  

The Workers' Compensation Specialist is responsible for the administration, coordination, and support of MorningStar Senior Living's workers' compensation program across all locations. This position serves as a liaison between injured team members, community leadership, medical providers, insurance carriers, third-party administrators, and internal stakeholders to ensure prevention, timely claim reporting, effective case management, regulatory compliance, positive return-to-work outcomes and overall, Workers’ Compensation and safety management.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

Workers' Compensation Administration

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for workers' compensation inquiries from community and team members and partners.
  • Partner with community locations, broker partner(s), insurance carrier and other partners to ensure each claim is reviewed, reported properly, and followed upon as deemed 
  • Educate managers and all team members on injury reporting protocols and return-to-work practices. 
  • Review incident reports and documentation for completeness, accuracy, and applied learnings. 
  • Monitor active claims and track claim progress through resolution. 
  • Assist in coordinating investigations related to workplace injuries and accidents. 

Return-to-Work and Leave Coordination

  • Coordinate transitional duty and return-to-work programs for injured team members. 
  • Work collaboratively with community leaders to identify modified-duty opportunities when appropriate. 
  • Track work restrictions and ensure compliance with physician recommendations. 
  • Monitor employee return-to-work status and communicate updates to management. 
  • Coordinate workers' compensation matters with leave administration processes, including FMLA, ADA accommodations, and state leave requirements as applicable. 

Claims Management and Cost Control

  • Monitor claim activity to identify trends, high-risk cases, and opportunities for intervention. 
  • Assist with claim reviews and carrier meetings.
  • Support efforts to reduce workers' compensation costs through proactive claim management and follow-up.
  • Prepare reports related to claims activity, injury trends, and program metrics.
  • Assist leadership with reserve reviews and claim status updates when requested.
  • Assist with policy development and process improvement efforts. 

Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local workers' compensation regulations across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Maintain OSHA-related injury records and all applicable state reporting requirements.  
  • Identify trends of injuries within communities and/or regions and/or the company so an applicable action plan can be put in place to rectify the negative trend.

Safety Training and Education 

  • Provide resources, training and accountability for onsite safety protocols.  Including training for and managing monthly safety meetings, safety inspections, and overall guidance to community leadership regarding best practices for a safe work environment.  
  • Audit completion of safety meetings and other activities within the communities. 
  • Promote a culture of workplace safety and injury prevention. 

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in workers' compensation, risk management, human resources, employee health, insurance claims administration, or a related role. 
  • Working knowledge of workers' compensation claim processes and return-to-work programs. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams. 
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail. 
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information. 
  • Education – Continuing education beyond high school diploma highly 
  • Willingness to travel to community locations as needed.
