Job Summary

Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) is seeking an enthusiastic, driven, and student-focused Assistant Womens Basketball Coach to join one of the premier NJCAA Division I programs in the region. Following the recent promotion of our former assistant coach, Shayane Poirot Allart, into the head coach role, we are looking for the next talented coach ready to make an impact on and off the court while developing the skills and experience of players.

The Cougar Womens Basketball program has built a reputation for competitiveness, player development, academic success, and advancing student-athletes to four-year institutions. As an assistant coach, youll gain valuable hands-on experience in all aspects of collegiate athletics, including:

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Coach in planning, organizing, and conducting practices, competitions, conditioning programs, and skill development activities.
  • Provide individual and team instruction in fundamental and advanced basketball techniques, strategies, and game preparation.
  • Support the development and implementation of strength, conditioning, and off-season training programs in collaboration with appropriate personnel.
  • Assist with identifying, evaluating, recruiting, and retaining prospective student-athletes in accordance with NJCAA, conference, and College policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate and participate in recruiting activities, including correspondence, phone communication, campus visits, scouting, and evaluation of game film.
  • Support the planning and execution of prospective student-athlete visits and coordinate related activities with appropriate College departments.
  • Monitor and support student-athlete academic progress, eligibility, retention, and participation in academic support services.
  • Assist with game-day operations, including preparation, logistics, equipment management, and coordination with officials, visiting teams, and support staff.
  • Coordinate team travel arrangements, including transportation, lodging, itineraries, and related logistics.
  • Assist with the supervision and coordination of student managers and other assigned support personnel.
  • Promote positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, and program supporters.
  • Assist with fundraising initiatives, youth camps, clinics, community outreach activities, and other program-related events.
  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with all applicable College, conference, NJCAA, and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Experience:

  • Experience coaching, instructing, competing, or working within organized athletics at the high school, collegiate, professional, or club level preferred.
  • Experience mentoring, motivating, and positively interacting with individuals from a variety of backgrounds preferred.
  • Experience planning, organizing, and coordinating activities, events, or programs preferred.
  • Experience communicating effectively with students, families, colleagues, and community stakeholders preferred.
  • Experience utilizing technology for communication, scheduling, recruiting, video analysis, or recordkeeping preferred.
  • Knowledge of intercollegiate athletics, recruiting practices, student-athlete development, and applicable rules and regulations preferred.

License or Certificate:

  • First Aid and CPR certification required within a reasonable timeframe after hire.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid drivers license and an acceptable driving record that does not exclude the driver from coverage under WNCC's vehicle insurance required.

  • Frequently stand and walk for extended periods during practices, competitions, recruiting activities, and events.
  • Frequently communicate verbally with student-athletes, coaches, officials, staff, and community members.
  • Regularly bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive movements associated with coaching and equipment management.
  • Occasionally demonstrate athletic skills and participate in practice activities.
  • Frequently use a computer and other office equipment to prepare reports, correspondence, recruiting materials, and schedules.
  • Occasionally move, lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in gymnasiums, athletic facilities, offices, training facilities, and various recruiting and competition venues.
  • Regular evening, weekend, holiday, and travel commitments are required.
  • May be exposed to varying weather conditions while recruiting, traveling, or participating in outdoor activities.
  • Noise levels may vary from moderate to high during practices, games, and special events.
