Oregon State University-Cascades is seeking a Project Coordinator. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Oregon State University Human and Ecosystem Resiliency and Sustainability (HERS) Lab is a research institution that delivers expertise in ecological assessment and monitoring, restoration, and native plant materials to support evidence-based conservation for the 21st century. The HERS Lab hosts the Upper Columbia Basin Inventory and Monitoring Network of the National Park Service (UCBN), East Cascades Native Plant Hub (ECNPH), the Wildlife Connectivity Hub, and the Northwestern Bat Hub on the OSU Cascades campus in Bend, OR. The Lab is hiring one Coordinator of Research Programs to lead wildlife connectivity research and monitoring programs and provide key project management support for the Data Analysis Unit (DAU), which provides data analysis support to the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Network.

This position serves as the coordinator for interagency wildlife connectivity research and technical expertise for projects primarily focused on Oregon roadways and adjacent habitats. The Coordinator will also work closely with the Data Analysis Unit and provide a lead role in project management for park-specific DAU analysis projects. The Coordinator will report to the lab director/project PI and will work closely with the PI on project management outcomes.

Work for this position is diverse and dynamic, well-balanced with hard work and time off, and offers a unique opportunity to lead a team in several facets of wildlife connectivity and data analysis work. The Coordinator hired for this position will support project activities based out of Bend, Oregon, as well as coordinate directly with federal and state agencies to determine regional wildlife connectivity support needs. The manager will also collaborate with the project PI and DAU staff to plan and implement national park-specific data analysis and reporting projects. This position will be based in Bend, OR, where there is excellent access to hiking, biking, rock climbing, fishing, and kayaking/rafting opportunities. The position is full-time (40-hours/week).

Key Responsibilities

This position is responsible for the day-to-day management and coordination of wildlife connectivity research operations, with necessary approvals from the PI on an as needed basis.

50%

  • Direct and coordinate camera trap and wildlife connectivity field operations
  • Supervise technician staff responsible for deployment and maintenance of camera traps at various locations associated with wildlife crossing structures along US Highway 97, US Highway 20, and other roadways as assigned.
  • Lead and/or facilitate collaborative meetings with federal and state agency partners and serve as the primary point of contact for HERS Lab inquiries focused on wildlife connectivity and movement.
  • Respond to federal and state agency requests for camera trap monitoring support.
  • Serve on Wildlife Passage Initiative committees as a representative of the HERS Lab and offer suggestions and recommendations based on project findings.
  • Develop and implement staffing and budget plans in coordination with the project PI.
  • Develop and pursue proposals for new funding in collaboration with the Project PI.

  • Manage DAU projects in coordination with the DAU Science Lead and NPS partners.
  • Coordinate with the DAU science lead and staff to schedule and lead team meetings as well as meetings with external NPS partners.
  • Implement analysis of complex study designs and analysis. This will include the use of statistical randomization procedures such as the Generalized Random Tessellation Stratified (GRTS) design approach commonly used in contemporary ecological studies where robust inference and analytical flexibility is required. Analyses of long-term trends in populations and ecosystems where rotating panel designs and unequal-probability design weights need to be accounted for, as well as challenges including imperfect detection and missing data. Approaches required may include Bayesian methods with informative priors.
  • Coordinate team member completion of project deliverables and reporting.
  • Manage DAU QA/QC procedures, data and report storage, and information sharing for all analysis projects in line with the established STRIDe framework and team data management protocols.
  • Report findings in technical reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts; makes recommendations to the NPS I&M for interpretation and translation into management strategies.
  • Refine existing and establish new analytical and science communication techniques for use with NPS managers.
  • Develop, monitor and communicate program metrics and outcomes

What You Will Need

  • Master's degree in wildlife science, environmental science, natural resources, or ecology.
  • At least two years of wildlife connectivity project management experience.
  • At least one year of experience coordinating a research team.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Experience with wildlife crossing structure monitoring and project management.
  • Experience leading pre and post-construction camera trap studies of wildlife connectivity projects.
  • Experience supervising teams of science technicians, including classified staff and students.
  • Experience with analysis of ecological data, and in particular with federal agency data collected in U.S. protected areas.
  • Experience with project management in a data analysis team environment.
  • Experience working with or for the National Park Service, and in particular the Inventory and Monitoring Network.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database programs (Microsoft Access).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, self-direct, and collaborate effectively.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Work schedule will vary depending on the project but will generally follow a Monday-Friday schedule, with some variation due to project requirements. The Coordinator will primarily work in an indoor office environment, with opportunities to engage in field work as desired.
