JOB SUMMARY This position performs technical duties in the application of chemicals to control weeds and mosquitoes throughout the City of Sheridan. In addition, this position is responsible for participating in the maintenance, upkeep, repair and development of city parks, public areas, pathways and cemetery. MAJOR DUTIES • Conducts surveillance of mosquito larvae in the spring; assists in the planning and implementation of mosquito control programs, including the application of larvicides. • Controls adult mosquitoes utilizing truck -mounted ultra -low volume sprayers and hand spraying equipment as needed. • Identifies weeds within the City of Sheridan and implements weed control programs, including the application of herbicides. • Maintains vehicles and equipment. • Collects and compiles data related to mosquito surveillance, environmental conditions, and pesticide and herbicide usage. • Cleans and maintains city parks, public green spaces, pathways and adjacent lands and buildings. • Removes snow and ice from city walk -ways, bridges and pathways. • Provides care for park elk and buffalo. • Responds to and resolves citizen complaints, questions and concerns. • Maintains and repairs irrigation systems. • Cleans and maintains park restrooms. • Plants, prunes and maintains trees and shrubs. • Maintains maps and related tracking data. • Assists in preparations for special events Weed & Pest Technician , Park s Page 2 • Trains, assigns, and directs, other employees in the realm of weed and pest control. • Assists Arborist with tree maintenance as assigned. • Performs related duties. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION • Knowledge of parks maintenance methods and materials. • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local laws and regulations. • Knowledge of weed and mosquito control principles, equipment, and materials. • Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance principles. • Knowledge of mosquito life cycles and related pesticide requirements. • Knowledge of the operations of computers and job -related software programs. • Skill in planning, organization, and decision making. • Skill in the maintenance of accurate records. • Skill in the safe handling of pesticides and herbicides. • Skill in the operation of snow removal equipment. • Skill in the repair and maintenance of sprinkler systems and water lines. • Skill in oral and written communication. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Natural Resources Coordinator and Parks Superintendent assign work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot -checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results . GUIDELINES Guidelines include division policies, safety regulations, and equipment operation manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK Weed & Pest Technician , Park s Page 3 • The work consists of varied supervisory, maintenance, and technical duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position. • The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the control of noxious weeds and insects and to repair and maintain city walkways and parks. Successful performance contributes to the health and safety of area residents as well as ensure well -maintained walkways and park facilities. CONTACTS • Contacts are typically with co -workers, vendors, part -time and seasonal personnel, and the general public. • Contacts are typically to resolve problems, provide services, and motivate persons. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY This position has functional supervision over seasonal personnel as assigned for weed and pest control. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with three to five years experience or service in public grounds and facility maintenance. • Possession of a valid drivers license issued by the State of Wyoming for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. • Possession of or ability to obtain within 6 month s the proper application license necessary to handle and apply chemicals.
