Job Overview

As a Water Supply Operator you will be responsible for manual, sem-skilled and skilled duties in the ioerationm installation, repair, and replacement of the water supply, pumping storage, and distribution systems.

Job Responsibilitiels

  • Maintain water distribution system including mains, valves, and service lines
  • Operate, inspect, and aid in the repair of water distribution systems including pressure reducing valves, water taps, service lines and fire hydrants.
  • Perform, various standard tasks using a wide varient of manual and powered equipment including end loaders, skid steers, shovels and power saws, drills, handtools, plumbing equipment, etc.
  • Be able to operate, inspect, maintain, rapair and/or build components on the supply pumping and storage system, including chemical handling, pumping equipment, electrical and building maintenance.
  • Collect samples and perform tests for water quality analysis
  • Respond to emergency situations such as water main breaks, scada failure, sewer backups, pump failrures, generator runs, powerfailure, water shut offs, and emergency utility marking.
  • Investigate service complaints and deal directly with the public.
  • Have consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Must be willing to participate in scheduled weekend and holiday overtime activities.
  • Must comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures and report all unsafe activities to the Water Superintendent or Public Works Director.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to support department and association goals.
  • Have the ability to show leadership to others through example and by sharing knowledge and skills.
  • Be able to perform other duties as required or assigned.
  • Have the ability to review and understand basic electrical diagrams, electrical circuits, and PLC programming.
  • Be able to use various electrical testing equipment such as a Voltage-Ohm Meter (VOM) or Amp Meter.
  • Have the ability to operate, inspect, and maintain the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Be able to perform basic troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical systems. Examples include chemical feed systems or electrical control panels.
  • Have knowledge of water supply, pumping, storage, and distribution systems and associated maintenance and repair methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Have general knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all pertinent machinery, equipment, and tools.
  • Have extensive knowledge of all applicable safety procedures and precautions.
  • Have effective communication skills for interaction with co-workers, contractors, governmental units, and the public.
  • Be able to learn the geographic layout of the complex.
  • Have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and be able to prepare written records and reports.
  • Possess the ability and willingness to respond to emergencies twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.

Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a Water Operators License issued by the Illinois EPA or receipt of one within eighteen (18) months of employment.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Position involves sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, shoving, lifting, carrying and moving objects that can weigh up to 50 lbs. This movement can occur throughout the day. Must also be able to climb several flights of stairs if necessary.

  • Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to communicate both on the phone and in person with our clients in order to resolve issues and manage the business.

  • Must have finger dexterity for typing/using a keyboard.

  • Must be mobile enough to move around both the office in order to make copies, send mail and faxes and to walk around the property. This could include lengthy walks on uneven areas.

  • Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors, and other associates.

  • Capable of working extended hours, to include evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary.

  • This position may alternate between working indoors in a controlled climate and with proper lighting, to an outdoors setting with variable climate and lighting.

  • Must be able to interact with all types of individuals, be mentally alert, detail oriented, and with good reasoning skills.

  • Must be able to work on more than one assignment at a time with frequent interruptions, changes and delays. Must be able to remain focused and work effectively, efficiently, and cheerfully under such circumstances. For safety reasons, employee must remain alert to working conditions and aware of safety, health, and environmental concerns.

  • Must be able to work effectively and cheerfully in an environment which may be stressful due to adversarial situations resulting from the proper performance of duties
