Job Summary:
Supervises and coordinates the installation, repair, maintenance, overhaul, and operation of water plant mechanical, electrical and electronic control devices; and performs other duties as required.
Examples of Duties:

Plans, supervises, and coordinates, through subordinate supervisors, the work activities involving the installation, maintenance, repair, programming, and operation of a variety of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition), and mechanical water pumping treatment equipment and appurtenances;
Keeps abreast of new technology in water plant equipment, instruments, and methodologies; conducts studies and research; reviews operations and analyzes activity reports; recommends new or improved work methods and practices to improve operations;
Oversees the inventory of materials, tools, equipment, and supplies; process requisitions to maintain inventory;
Reads, reviews, and interprets plans and specifications; prepares sketches of water plant work and installations as required;
Supervises plant personnel; assigns and reviews the work of subordinates; recommends all personnel actions including hiring, promotion, disciplinary actions, and terminations;
Responsible for the 24 hour-a day, 7-day a week operation of the department's plant facilities; subject to emergency call-outs; makes decisions on measures to be taken;
Enforces and promotes all Federal, State, and County laws, regulations, and policies relating to occupational safety and health;
Recommends budgetary requirements for plant operation and maintenance; and
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and
five and one half (5 ½) years of experience in water system maintenance and operational experience in plant electrical and electronic equipment, devices, and systems; and
two (2) years of supervisory experience.
Qualifying Supervisory Work Experience:
Work experience which includes planning, directing, assigning, and reviewing the work of others; advising subordinates on difficult program areas; timing and scheduling subordinate work; and training and developing new employees.
License Requirement:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Hawaii type 3 or equivalent). State of Hawaii Distribution System Operator (DSO), Grade 3 and Water Treatment Plant Operator (WTPO), Grade 1 certifications to be obtained within the first year of employment and be kept current thereafter.
