Job Description

DEFINITION:

Under the general supervision of the Water Plant Superintendent, the Water Plant Maintenance Supervisor maintains, repairs, and installs water treatment plant equipment at the water treatment plant, booster pump station water tower and tanks, machinery and related facilities; maintains a variety of records; participates in special projects; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  1. Directs preventive maintenance program for plant equipment, machinery and related facilities; identify equipment maintenance needs; record mechanical equipment readings; ensure accuracy of records kept.
  2. Perform routine mechanical, electrical, welding, or machining maintenance activities on equipment including lubrication, inspection, and replacement parts; order and maintain stock levels of lubricants used in plant equipment.
  3. Maintain records of plant equipment history; maintain preventative maintenance records and schedules.
  4. Conduct performance tests of plant equipment using tachometers, pressure gauges, flowmeter, amp and volt meters.
  5. Diagnose, troubleshoot, update and repair malfunctioning plant equipment; maintain, repair and overhaul treatment plant equipment including aeration blowers, pumps and motors, compressors, centrifuges, valves, drive units, hydraulic control units, chlorinators, chemical feeders, pneumatic equipment and hydraulic pressure systems.
  6. Participate in the installation of water treatment plant equipment; participate in making modifications to equipment for maximum treatment process performance
  7. Perform limited pipefitting; install and repair air, sewer, and hydraulic piping systems
  8. Maintain efficient records on operations and activities
  9. Ensure employees adhere to safe work practices and procedures including, but not limited to lock- out/tag-out and confined space rules and regulations
  10. Interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics and diagrams for a variety of water systems
  11. Assist with maintenance of the SCADA system and instrumentation as necessary
  12. Participate in special projects as assigned. Attends meetings with DPW staff and outside consultants to assist in the review and development of project proposals.
  13. Performs the functions of a water plant operator when needed
  14. Maintains a Class 4 Water License

OTHER RELATED FACTORS:

     Incumbent may work outside and, as a result, works in all kinds of climatic and weather conditions

     Must frequently stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

     Must be capable of lifting loads up to 50 pounds and, with assistance, as much as 100 pounds Due to the nature of the work the incumbent is exposed to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes,

gases, oils, toxic chemicals, and inclement weather conditions; work with water and/or in confined

spaces.

     Must wear proper protective equipment

     Employee is required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis, seven days per week, e.g., severe storms, vandalism, mechanical failures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of methods and techniques of maintaining and repairing water plant equipment, machinery, and related facilities

Knowledge of lubricants used in plant equipment Knowledge of electrical codes

Knowledge of fundamentals of pipefitting and fabrication Programmable logic controls, telemetry units and fiber optics Ability to operate standard office equipment

Understanding of basic mathematics

Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices

Ability to read, interpret and understand technical manuals, blueprints, drawings, and diagrams Ability to operate a variety of maintenance equipment in a safe and effective manner

Ability to work with Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Ability to maintain detailed records and prepare clear and concise reports

Ability to adapt to changing technologies and learn the functionality of new equipment and systems Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Ability to communicate orally and in writing and ability to perform as a member of a team. Skills in operating various tools and metering/measuring devices

Education and Experience:

     Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; specialized training in the mechanical trade preferred

        Must have 4 years' experience in water production 

     Possession of a valid Class 4 Water License preferred
